Bunting was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Henry A. and Mary Shotwell Ingraham; she was known as "Polly" to distinguish her from her mother. Her father was an attorney; her mother was the head of the national YWCA and helped found the USO during World War II. Bunting graduated from Vassar College in 1931, and earned master's (1932) and doctoral degrees (1934) from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in agricultural bacteriology. While at Wisconsin, she met Henry Bunting, then a medical student, who went on to teach pathology at the Yale University School of Medicine. They married in 1937, and had one daughter and three sons. He died of brain cancer in 1954. In 1975, Bunting married Clement A. Smith, a professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School; he died in 1988.
Bunting, a microbiologist, taught and conducted research at Bennington College, Goucher College, Yale University, and Wellesley College before becoming dean, in 1955, of Douglass College, the women's school at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She was named president of Radcliffe in 1960. The same year, she was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Once at Radcliffe, Bunting gained national attention for identifying a societal problem she called a "climate of unexpectation" for girls, which resulted in "the waste of highly talented educated womanpower." She told Time:
'Adults ask little boys what they want to do when they grow up. They ask little girls where they got that pretty dress. We don't care what women do with their education.'
Bunting brought change to Radcliffe. During her tenure, Radcliffe women began to receive Harvard degrees, women were admitted to the university's graduate and business schools, and the Radcliffe Graduate School merged with Harvard's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. She also founded the Radcliffe Institute for Independent Study, a multidisciplinary postgraduate center of advanced studies for women; it was later renamed the Bunting Institute in her honor.
Bunting was named "Outstanding Woman of the Year" in the field of education by Who's Who, and received the National Institute of Social Scientists' gold medal in 1962. In 1964, Bunting took a leave of absence from Radcliffe to serve on the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission; she was the first woman to ever do so. Bunting was a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and was awarded over a dozen honorary degrees. Smith College, Southern Methodist University, and the University of Vermont are a few of the schools to have honored her.
She left Radcliffe in 1972, and became special assistant to the president of Princeton University, where she remained until 1975. She retired to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and then to New Hampshire, where she died in 1998.

Rutgers University. Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of the University. Records, 1917-1968.
Title:
Records, 1917-1968.
The records of the Vice Provost and Dean of the University, Albert E. Meder, consist of more than 13 cubic feet of papers. They are housed in forty manuscript boxes. The collections spans the years between 1917 and 1968 and relate to the many positions held by Meder at Rutgers. The majority of these papers reflect his administrative duties at Rutgers rather than his professorial duties. The collection largely consists of reports and correspondence. The collection has been divided into three series, which have been arranged alphabetically. The Subject Files series contains documents from 1933 to 1968. The series documents the many academic areas Meder was involved in at Rutgers, with files representing many academic departments and issues. This series also contains the Meder's files on the Middle States Association Evaluation in the 1950s and 1960s. The Committee Files series documents the many committees Meder served on and received reports from during his time at Rutgers. These files span between 1917, predating Meder's arrival at Rutgers, to 1968, the year of his departure. In some cases, the committee names reflect the growing concerns of the times, such as the War Curricula files from the mid 1940s and the Television files from the 1960s. Other more longstanding committee concerns include academic standards and personnel policy. The Name Files series contains the voluminous correspondence to and from Meder to many different members of the Rutgers community between 1943 and 1968. This series also contains memoranda Meder sent out to deans and department heads along with a large number of letters to and from President Mason W. Gross before and during tenures as provost and president of Rutgers.

Horner, Matina. Records of the President of Radcliffe College: Series 5, 1972-1989 (inclusive).
Title:
Records of the President of Radcliffe College: Series 5, 1972-1989 (inclusive).
Collection consists of Horner's correspondence, while she was president of Radcliffe, 1972-1989, with Harvard and Radcliffe administrators and trustees, educational foundations, students, alumni/ae, parents, and Harvard faculty. They also include some correspondence with the Harvard Department of Psychology relating to her teaching. There are university committee reports, surveys, and petitions from students that provide documentation for Harvard/ Radcliffe institutional history, the evolving Harvard/Radcliffe relationship, and, more broadly, for U.S. women's higher education. The records illustrate women's issues of the 1970s and 1980s, such as the inequity and reform of women's athletics (crew, swimming, fencing, squash etc.); discrimination against women in admissions; the changing status of women staff and faculty at Harvard; the development of women's studies; the participation of women in science; sexual harassment; women's experience of co-residence; and the attitudes and experience of Radcliffe students, including African American students and Native American students.
