Playwright. Alan Schneider b. 1917, d. 1984.
American author, director and producer, Edward Albee has won numerous awards for his plays.
Edward Albee, playwright.
Dramatist.
Edward Albee (1928- ) is an American author and playwright.
American author.
Edward F. Albee III was born March 12, 1928 in Washington D.C. The adopted son of Reed A. Albee (owner of a theatrical circuit) and Frances Cotter Albee, he was educated at Valley Forge Military Academy (1943-1944), Choate School (1944-1946), Trinity College (Hartford, Connecticut 1946-1947), and Columbia University (1949). His breakthrough dramatic work, The Zoo Story, was first performed in tandem with Samuel Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape in West Berlin in 1959. Career highlights range from his most famous work, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1962), to his three Pulitzer Prize for Drama winners, A Delicate Balance (1967), Seascape (1975), and Three Tall Women (1991).
Alexander LaFayette Chew Wilder was born on February 16, 1907, in Rochester, New York. He grew up in New Jersey, Long Island, and New York City, and attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, where he studied composition and counterpoint. His career as a composer began in 1930, when he was one of the co-writers of the song “All the King's Horses” for the musical revue Three's a Crowd.
Over the next fifty years, Wilder wrote several hundred popular songs, among them “It's so Peaceful in the Country,” “I'll Be Around,” and “All the Cats Joined In.” (Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Marlene Dietrich, and Anita O'Day are among the artists who recorded Wilder songs.) He also composed sonatas for the bassoon, flute, and tuba, works for the piano, a concerto for saxophone and chamber orchestra, five operas, and a ballet; and published two books: Letters I Never Mailed (1975), and, with James T. Maher, American Popular Song: The Great Innovators, 1900-1950 (1972).
Wilder lived at the Algonquin Hotel in Manhattan for nearly fifty years. He died of lung cancer in Gainesville, Florida, in December 1980.
Edward Franklin Albee III was born on March 12, 1928, probably in Virginia, and adopted by Reed A. and Frances (Cotter) Albee shortly after his birth. The Albees, a wealthy family with theatrical connections, lived in Larchmont, New York. Albee grew up alienated by his parents' lifestyle and struck out on his own, moving to Greenwich Village, NY, after three semesters at Trinity College. He had various jobs; his favorite was as a messenger for Western Union, before achieving his first success in 1959 with a German language production in Berlin of his play, The Zoo Story . His best known work, which scandalized Broadway in 1962 and established him as America's most acclaimed young playwright, is Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? .
In 1963 Albee, with Richard Barr and Clinton Wilder, began producing new plays by new playwrights at a theater they rented in Greenwich Village and thus were a part of the burgeoning Off-Off Broadway movement. In 1964 Albee created the Edward Albee Foundation, a summer retreat at Montauk, Long Island, which provides living and working space for six artists. Albee has taught playwriting at various colleges and often directs his own plays. After the 1960s his writing became less prolific and less well received. For many years he has been more popular in Europe than in America. However, he has won numerous awards including the Pulitzer Prize three times: for A Delicate Balance in 1967, Seascape in 1975 and Three Tall Women in 1994.

Literary encounters: photographs, 1985-1992.
In 1992 the Cooper Union hosted a photographic exhibition entitled "Literary Encounters" that documented an exchange between Czech and American writers in 1985 and 1990. In 1985 the following American writers went to Prague: Arthur Miller, William Styron, Kurt Vonnegut, John Updike, Edward Albee, Galway Kinnell and Robert Stone. In 1990 these Czech writers in turn visited New York City: Jáchym Topol, Arnošt Lustig, Ota Černý, Eda Kriseová, Karel Pecka, Josef Škvorecký and Ivan Klíma. The 34 photographs and didactic panels formed the exhibit, which seems to have been mounted, in part, to celebrate Václav Havel's receipt of the International Peace Prize. Included in the collection is a video of the exhibition.

Title:
Richard Barr and Clinton Wilder papers
The Richard Barr-Clinton Wilder Papers contain a great deal of documentation on the working aspects of the collaboration between Barr, Wilder and Edward Albee whose various producing units helped to establish a number of imporant American playwrights in the 1960s. In addition they document the work that Barr did with Charles Woodward, Jr. after Wilder left the Playwrights Unit as well as the work done by Barr and Wilder before they formed their partnership. The Administrative Files and Production series contain correspondence; production files, such as contracts, agreements, cast and crew lists, inventories, schedules, costume plots, and lighting plots; some scripts; programs; legal papers; business papers and clippings. The bulk of the documents, however, are financial records including royalty statements, box office statements, ledgers, bank statements, invoices and receipts. The more personal papers in the collection including writings, photographs and ephemera document Richard Barr's life and work. There are no similar items documenting the life of Clinton Wilder. The scrapbooks doument the work of the Playwrights Unit, mostly through clippings; they appear to have been put together by Barr.

The papers also contain Taylor's professional and personal correspondence, 1948-1977. The former contains letters from Katherine S. White and Robert Angell of the New Yorker, Robert Giroux of Harcourt, Brace, and Co., and David McDowell of Random House and McDowell, Obolensky, and are chiefly concerned with the editing of Taylor's work for publication. Title:
Inventory to the Records of the Conference on Literature and Urban Experience (CLUE), Rutgers University Newark, April 17-19, 1980 1978-1983
The Conference on Literature and the Urban Experience (hereafter referred to as "CLUE"), took place on April 17, 18, and 19, 1980, in the Robeson Center, Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. It featured more than 50 distinguished writers and academics discussing a wide range of topics—"literature, theater, film, education, and the visual arts" focusing on the theme of urban experience. Designed as an educational experiment intended to engage a larger, public audience, CLUE intended to reach out to the public at large and involve it in a broad discussion of the modern urban experience. CLUE was an important event in several respects: first, it was an important humanities gathering focusing on a timely theme; second, it was a community outreach experiment; and finally, it succeeded in disseminating materials from the conference in a variety of formats. The records are divided into five separate series: I. Participants' Correspondence and Conference Papers, II. CLUE Organizational Papers, III. Fundraising Efforts, IV. Information on the Rutgers University Press (RUP) Publication Papers, V. Photographs

Title:
Mark Hall Amitin/World of Culture for the Performing Arts, Inc. archive, 1946-2001.
Amitin's personal papers in Series I represent his work over a thirty-year period, as an agent, actor, writer, tour manager, and teacher. The series comprises correspondence, brochures, notes, flyers, legal documents, scripts, screenplays, playbills, and personal memorabilia. Series II and IV contain the organizational archives for Universal Movement Theatre Repertory and World of Culture, both non-profit performing arts agencies that Amitin was central to. Amitin was also associated with The Living Theatre from the mid-1960's. He was their touring manager from 1968-1969 and their General Manager in 1984. Series III contains extensive documentation of Living Theatre productions, performances and activities from these periods and includes brochures, correspondence, flyers, posters, scripts, interviews, press clippings, handwritten production notes, and journals. The materials in this collection make an important contribution to the representation of avant-garde performing and theatrical arts from the nineteen seventies through the early nineteen nineties. Amitin participated in and represented several key avant-garde performing arts groups of this period, helping them to make contacts in other countries, to perform at important theatre festivals in the United States and Europe, and to secure funding for tours abroad and at home. He worked closely with such writers and directors as Edward Albee, Joseph Chaikin, and Jean-Claude van Itallie, helping to produce tours and individual performances at venues all over the world.

Lucille Lortel papers
Title:
Lucille Lortel papers
The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

The correspondence, 1963-1992, generally concerns Kennedy's career as a playwright, writer, and educator, though some correspondence is of a more personal nature. Significant correspondents include Edward Albee, Imamu Amiri Baraka, Gwendolyn Brooks, Ed Bullins, Joseph Chaikin, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Gerald Freedman, Nikki Giovanni, Elizabeth Hardwick, James Earl Jones, Michael Kahn, Elia Kazan, Galt MacDermot, Theodore Mann, William Marshall, Mike Nichols, Joseph Papp, Harold Pinter, Ishmael Reed, Jerome Robbins, John Selby, Victor Spinetti, Fay Weldon, Edgar White, Audrey Wood, and others. Title:
The Jack Gelber Papers 1938-2002 (Bulk 1957-1999)
The Jack Gelber Papers reflect their creator's career as a writer, director and teacher of American theatre. Much of the collection is composed of Gelber's correspondence and writing, particularly his plays. The collection also holds a smaller amount of records dedicated to a number of the theatre productions and workshops he directed which included performances of his own works. However there are few documents concerning his career as an instructor. As a whole the collection contains substantial quantities of correspondence, typescript drafts, handwritten notes, printed advertisements, and clippings along with a few journal entries, audiotapes, and videocassettes.

Absent from the collection is original correspondence between Schneider and Samuel Beckett and the collection contains only a small amount of photocopies of correspondence between Schneider and Beckett. Winter, Ella. Papers, 1913-1978.
Title:
Papers, 1913-1978.
Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, notes, photographs, and printed material of Winter. The papers cover primarily the years after 1952 when she and Stewart settled in England to avoid involvement in the House Un-American Activities Committee investigations. Winter traveled widely in Russia, visited China in 1958, and spent nine months in Ghana in 1965. Her journeys are well documented in this collection. Among the manuscripts are drafts for many of her periodical articles, typescripts of her autobiography AND NOT TO YIELD, and articles written about her travels. Also, files on art, the labor movement in California, Robinson Jeffers, the McCarthy era, Lincoln Steffens, and Vietnam. There are numerous photographs taken on her trips abroad, including her work with the Friends of Austria, 1920, of many theatrical productions, and of her family and home. Because of her eclectic interests she was acquainted with many prominent individuals in politics, literature, theatre, and the arts. Among the major correspondents are Edward Albee, Charles and Oona Chaplin, W.E.B. Du Bois, Katharine Hepburn, Carey McWilliams, Kwame Nkrumah, Sean O'Casey, and Muriel Rukeyser.

Alan Schneider Papers
Title:
Alan Schneider Papers
Papers of Alan Schneider, a theatrical director who has been associated with the work of Edward Albee, Robert Anderson, Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Thornton Wilder, Tennessee Williams, and other prominent modern playwrights. The bulk of the collection consists of papers relating to plays which Schneider directed or considered for direction, from director's scripts, production notes, correspondence, and contracts to playbills and clippings. Represented are productions on Broadway, off-Broadway, on television, and by various regional and student theatrical groups. Also relating to professional activities are subject files on international travel as a theater student, his association with numerous professional organizations, and his consultation for the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Theatre Communications Group. On tape is a 1966 interview which expresses views on the American stage. A group of writings include published articles and essays, radio scripts written for the Office of War Information and other federal agencies during World War II, and unpublished writings and plays. Among the noteworthy correspondents are Richard Aldrich, Robert C. Gard, Julie Harris, Garson Kanin, Walter F. Kerr, Harold B. McCarty, Joseph Papp, Gregory Peck, and David Susskind.

Photographs

Dean Goodman is an actor, director and theatre critic in the Bay Area. His acting career took him to Hollywood, Broadway and on a tour of the United States and Canada. He was acclaimed for his Shakespearian roles. He also performed in musical comedies, in films (Coppola's Tucker, among others), and in television. Max Lerner papers, 1927-1998
Title:
Max Lerner papers 1927-1998
The papers consist of correspondence, speeches, writings, and other papers, (including research and teaching materials, photographs, memorabilia, newspaper and periodical clippings, books, and radio and television tapes) of Max Lerner, an American educator, author, lecturer, historian, and political scientist. The papers focus on Lerner's public life and career with very little material on his personal or family life. The papers document Lerner's close association with Justice Felix Frankfurter and Harold J. Laski, his controversial writings on homosexuality, his work with the Democratic Party during Adlai Stevenson's presidential campaigns, his work on behalf of Jewish causes and Zionism, and his activities during the "red scare" of the 1950s.

Title:
The Frederick and Rose Plaut papers, 1907-1986 (inclusive).
The Frederick and Rose Plaut Archives consist mainly of negatives, contact sheets, and enlargements of photographs taken by Fred Plaut during his years as a recording engineer for Columbia Records. Over 35,000 negatives and 3,600 enlargements portray musicians, writers, actors, artists, and diplomats, both in candid studio shots and posed publicity photos. An additional 23,000 negatives and 2,000 enlargements depict travel and miscellaneous subjects. The Archives contain books, magazines, posters, and record jackets which reproduce Plaut's photographs. The Archives also house correspondence between the Plauts and various composers, including Francis Poulenc, Virgil Thomson, Ned Rorem, and Henri Sauguet. The Plauts' life and work are documented further by exhibit announcements, recital programs of Rose Plaut (known as singer Rose Dercourt), and personal papers.
