Purdy, James
James Purdy (b. 1923) is an American author whose published works include 63: Dream Palace (published in the United States in 1957 as Color of Darkness), Eustace Chisholm and the Works (1967), I Am Elijah Thrush, (1972) and On Glory's Course (1984).

James Purdy, American novelist, was born in Ohio and educated at the Universities of Chicago and Puebla, Mexico. He published his first collection of short stories, Color of darkness, in 1957 and his first novel, Malcolm, in 1959. His most recent novel is entitled, In the hollow of his hand (1986). Purdy has also published collections of poetry and plays.

In the summer of 1984, sport divers James Purdy and Alan Rixon located a number of objects in Silver Lake, which were confiscated by the United States Forest Service. The following summer they returned with Susan Alfonso under an agreement with the Forest Service and with a permit issued by the Vermont State Division for Historic Preservation to survey part of the lake bottom.

James Purdy was born July 17, 1923 in Ohio. He was an American novelist and short-story writer whose works explored the American way of life and presented a vision of human alienation, indifference, and cruelty. Purdy, who grew up in small Ohio towns, was educated at the Universities of Chicago and Puebla (Mexico). He served as an interpreter and taught for a few years before turning to writing full-time. His first two works - Don't Call Me by My Right Name and Other Stories and 63: Dream Palace, a novella (both 1956) - were rejected by a number of American publishing houses and were first published by Purdy through a subsidy publisher. These books won support of Dame Edith Sitwell and, following their publication in England, met with critical acclaim in America as well.
