They include biographical information on members of the Foreign Mission Board who served between 1950 and 1980; nineteenth-century reports of committees on work in Africa, Brazil, and China; reports of Southern Baptist Convention and Foreign Mission Board conferences, consultations, and planning sessions of the 1960s to 1980s related to missions strategy; miscellaneous clippings and other documents on a variety of topics; assorted nineteenth- and early twentieth-century publications, reports, sermons, and addresses; correspondence from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth-centuries arranged by topic; and correspondence and writings of Corresponding and Executive Secretaries dating from 1847 to 1984.

Concerning efforts to raise funds for the newly formed Southern Baptist Theological Seminary: "Boyce goes up Saturday. Be sure to get him a good subscription in C[harlottesville]."

Broaddus concerning a dispute between Tinsley and Farrish]. He mentioned that "the committee have decided adversely to Bro. Poindexter's release from the Mission Board."

Title: Papers of Robert Green Ingersoll, 1877-1909.

The collection contains a biography of Ingersoll by Elbert Hubbard and correspondence with the Knickerbocker Publishing Company about the manuscript. The collection also contains 4 manuscripts by Ingersoll: 3 essays attacking religion, particularly Christianity and a manuscript quotation. Letters from Ingersoll discuss lectures, financial matters including a payment to Ouida, social events, Henry George, and an unsubstantiated charge of indictment for blasphemy. There are also notes of sympathy and replies to admirers. Judge John J. Brady, [Baron Harden-Hickey?] and Edgar Fawcett are also mentioned. In addition the papers contain a scrapbook, 1884-1892, re Ingersoll and other subjects of contemporary interest including William H. Thomson's address on materialism, the Rev. Charles H. Parkhurst's conflicts with B.F. DeCosta and William O'Brien Pardow, and obituaries of prominent people including Walt Whitman. With these is an annotated telegram re prayers offered for Ingersoll in Cleveland, Ohio.

Taylor (1809-1871) and Sarah McClanahan of west Tennessee, chiefly letters from relatives at various places in Tennessee about family matters; eight letters, 1846-1848, from and muster rolls of John R. McClanahan, a journalist, captain in the Mexican War, and later part owner of the "Memphis Appeal;" a printed map, 1848, of the battles of Contreras and Churubusco and the March on Mexico City; and issues of two English-language newspapers published in Mexico during the Mexican War ("The American Eagle," Vera Cruz, 6 April 1847, Vol. 1, No. 2; and "Daily American Star," City of Mexico, May 1847, Vol. 1, Nos 186, 187, 188, and 192). The letters from McClanahan discuss his daily routine, diet, and travel in some detail.

We all feel the importance of having a minister from the South--not that we have any idea that any feeling will ever exist among us upon any subject connected with North or South. We all feel that California is common ground for both sections of the Union. But we are convinced that if we had a minister here from the South with whom the Southern Board could regularly correspond and feel that they had some interest here, they would do more for our state in sending ministers ... Bro. Rollinson, Pastor of the Pine Street Baptist Church in San Francisco came up on a visit to us last week. He was the successor of Brother Gillette at Raway [sic], N.J.I will write to Bro. J.B. Taylor and if possible get the Southern [Domestic Mission] Board to pay the expense of your outfit and passage to California."

The Manly Family Papers (which are primarily handwritten family correspondence) include .5 linear ft. of material contained in one document box. The collection is arranged in a rough chronological order by the date of the correspondence included in the collection. These letters range from October of 1829 to February of 1868. There are approximately 332 items in the collection. In addition to family news, the collection includes information on the founding of the Baptist Sunday School Board in Greenville, South Carolina, discusses the publication of Baptist Sunday school materials and efforts to promote Sunday schools in local churches, the opinions of various pro-secessionists about the Union Army and religious life during the American Civil War, and opinions about the work and conditions of various state conventions such as Georgia and Alabama. Other items in the collection include a bill of sale for a slave, a certificate of marriage, and receipts for the University and sermon notes. Taylor, writiing as General Secretary of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, thanks Brown for $60.00 and the example he has set. He asks Brown to write an article for "The Commission" on the subject of the contribution, as well as other shorter articles. He regrets that Brown cannot attend a meeting that will be small due to cholera in Richmond.
