The Manly Family Papers (which are primarily handwritten family correspondence) include .5 linear ft. of material contained in one document box. The collection is arranged in a rough chronological order by the date of the correspondence included in the collection. These letters range from October of 1829 to February of 1868. There are approximately 332 items in the collection. In addition to family news, the collection includes information on the founding of the Baptist Sunday School Board in Greenville, South Carolina, discusses the publication of Baptist Sunday school materials and efforts to promote Sunday schools in local churches, the opinions of various pro-secessionists about the Union Army and religious life during the American Civil War, and opinions about the work and conditions of various state conventions such as Georgia and Alabama. Other items in the collection include a bill of sale for a slave, a certificate of marriage, and receipts for the University and sermon notes. Papers of Basil Manly, Sr. and Jr. Both served as Southern Baptist ministers and educators.
