Title:
Macbeth Gallery records
The Macbeth Gallery records provide almost complete coverage of the gallery's operations from its inception in 1892 to its closing in 1953. Through extensive correspondence files, financial and inventory records, printed material, scrapbooks, reference and research material, and photographs of artists and works of art, the records document all aspects of the gallery's activities, charting William Macbeth's initial intention to lease his store "for the permanent exhibition and sale of American pictures" through over sixty years of success as a major New York firm devoted to American art. The collection measures 131.6 linear feet and dates from 1838 to 1968 with the bulk of the material dating from 1892 to 1953.

Sully, Thomas, 1783-1872. Memoirs of the professional life of Thomas Sully dedicated to his brother artists, Philadelphia, November 1851.
Title:
Memoirs of the professional life of Thomas Sully dedicated to his brother artists, Philadelphia, November 1851.
This volume of Sully's memoirs covers two areas of his professional life: the techniques of his artistry and his recollections of some of the painters that he knew. In the preface to this manuscript, Sully writes that through his work as an artist, he collected hints and gained experiences that he wanted to pass on to other painters. Among the painting techniques that Sully wrote about were the most important facial features that a portrait needed to highlight, how to paint backgrounds, the usefulness of sketching and modelling in clay for the painter, and how to most effectively arrange a palette. Sully reconstructs a palette that he considered "the best I have tried" and another that he customarily used for a third portrait sitting. Reflecting his admiration for Gilbert Stuart, Sully records two of his palettes, one of which was designed specifically for painting flesh. Sully also addresses different ways in which varnishes were used and provides formulae for paints and varnishes. He even includes a color chart to show how primary colors are mixed to produce other colors. Sully used small drawings to amplify his thoughts. One illustration depicts John Trumbull's small exhibition room on Barclay St., New York City, while another relates to the use of light in portrait painting. Sully comments on painters of his and other generations and critiques their work. Artists including Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Gainsborough, Henr y Fuseli, Charles Willson Peale, Benjamin West, Joshua Reynolds, Washington Allston, Thomas Lawrence, C.R. Leslie, and J.M.W. Turner all come under Sully's scrutiny. Of West, he notes: "I need not say how much I reaped from the services of this good man; he treated me as if I had been his son." Sully also remarks on a study group in which he took part while in London and his activities with other artists everywhere. In 1873, a short edited version of this text, Hints to Young Painters and the Process of Portrait Painting, was printed under Sully's name as a posthumous publication. F. T. S. Darley, Sully's grandson, edited the volume for publication and it contains Darley's penciled-in editorial modifications.

Lawrence Park Research Files on Gilbert Stuart, 1904-1925 (bulk 1920-1925).
This collection consists primarily of correspondence concerning the history and authentication of paintings by Gilbert Stuart, a prominent early American portraitist. Begun as an independent project by Lawrence Park, the project was completed by William Sawitzky under the auspices of Helen Clay Frick and the Frick Art Reference Library after the death of Mr. Park in September 1924, and resulted in the publication "Gilbert Stuart: an Illustrated Descriptive List of his Works." The collection contains Lawrence Park and William Sawitzky correspondence with the owners of paintings, scholars and descendents of portrait subjects, and note cards arranged by portrait subject detailing information about Stuart's paintings. Items such as notes, correspondence, drawings, and family trees were attached to many of the note cards.

In a letter to a Mr. Hopkins, Mifflin discusses the difficult nature of the sonnet form; Thomas Bailey Aldrich's critique of his sonnets, particularly "The flight," "Sesostus," "Transmutation," and "Tithannus" sonnets he has written on a painting by Cuyp, and "The annunciation" by Mingard; and a forthcoming volume of lyrics. He also discusses the format of "Current literature," suggesting that a photograph of Mingard's painting be published with the sonnet. In a letter to a Mr. Price, he sends biographical information on Thomas Mifflin, mentions portraits of him by Gilbert Stuart and John Trumbull, and makes reference to Keith's account of Mifflin.

Newsam, Albert, 1809-1864. Albert Newsam Print Collection, 1822-1881 bulk 1829-1860.
Title:
Albert Newsam Print Collection, 1822-1881 bulk 1829-1860.
The Albert Newsam Print Collection is primarily black and white lithographed portraits drawn on stone by Newsam from life or after other artists and photographers. The collection holds images of several hundred prominent figures from the period spanning the late 1820s through the early 1860s. There are more than seventy religious figures, particularly Episcopal and Presbyterian clergyman, many of which were published in the U.S. Ecclesiastical Portrait Gallery (1841), and the Presbyterian Historical Almanac (1858). Other dominant occupations are medicine (doctors and dentists), lawyers, judges, military figures, writers, composers, performing artists (dance, music, and theatre), and Philadelphia merchants. Many of the subjects are politicians. There are portraits of eight Pennsylvania governors from George Wolf (1829) through William F. Packer (1858), fifteen American presidents from George Washington through James Buchanan (1857), cabinet members, and congressmen from a variety of states. Many of the portraits were produced for publications - - both books and serials - - as well as for sheet music. Some of the prints have printed or hand-applied color. Several of the images are present in varying states, and there are a number of duplicates. The Historical Society owns all but 91 of the 555 identified Newsam works. Artists most often copied are the painters Henry Inman, Charles Bird King, John Neagle, Gilbert Stuart, and Thomas Sully, and Philadelphia photographers M.A. Root and McClees & Germon. The prints were primarily published by P.S. Duval, as well as other firms including: C.G. Childs; Childs & Inman; Pendleton, Kearny & Childs; Lehman & Duval. Newsam created a series of portraits of Indians for Thomas L. McKenney's noted History of the Indian Tribes of North America, published in Philadelphia between 1836 and 1844. Also included in the collection are the plates from four medical publications published in Philadelphia which contain images by Newsam: Pancoast's Treatise on Operative Surgery (1st edition, 1844 and 3rd edition, 1852); Quain and Wilson's Series of Anatomical Plates (1842); and Rayer's A Theoretical and Practical Treatise on the Diseases of the Skin (1845). The Newsam prints were acquired by the Historical Society through gift and purchase between 1881 and 1965. The largest accession came in April 1881, when 162 prints were donated by John A. McAllister. The prints in that group were Albert Newsam's personal copies, and had been given to McAllister by Newsam near the end of his life. Many are proofs before letters and were annotated by the artist. More than 150 additional prints were acquired by the Historical Society at sales and auctions in the period between 1910 and 1919.

Cogdell, John S. (John Stevens), 1778-1847. Diaries and letter books, 1808-1841.
Title:
Diaries and letter books, 1808-1841.
Consists of six volumes that document Cogdell's travels and artistic endeavors in 1808, 1816, 1825, and from 1829 to 1841. The first volume opens with Cogdell's expenses for a trip from Philadelphia to New York. The narrative portion of the notebook offers vignettes of life in the early 19th century. He relays his impressions of the Peale Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He visited the Bettering House Hospital, later called the Pennsylvania Hospital, and toured a prison. He dined and otherwise socialized with many prominent Philadelphians during his stay. On Sept. 8, he traveled through New Jersey to New York City. He visited the panorama of Edward Savage. He was most impressed by St. John's Church in New York City. This manuscript also features wash drawings of people in ancient costumes and various poses, pencil sketches of buildings and landscapes, and formulae for various artists' preparations. The second volume is a letterbook containing a series of letters addressed to "Dear Friend" that describe a trip to Philadelphia and New York in 1816. Cogdell begins each letter with notes about the place from which he is writing. He offers comments on the Quaker community and area museums. He wrote a great deal about the work and methods of Thomas Sully. Cogdell provides depictions of the use of stoves and sketches of local scenery and some of Sully's works. The third volume is also from 1816 and was also kept in the form of letters to a friend. In it, Cogdell describes a trip up the Hudson, on to Lake George, to Boston, New Haven, Trenton, Baltimore, and ending in Raleigh, N.C. He discusses Trumbell's work at great length. The manuscript also features pencil and pen and ink sketches that correspond to places and scenes represented in the text. Scenes from Fishkill and West Point are identified. The next volume begins in 1825 with another trip north from Charleston. In Boston, Cogdell met with artists Gilbert Stuart, Washington Allston, Jonathan Mason, and Francis Alexander. He commented on the work and private collections of each of these men. In Philadelphia, he again visited the Pennsylvania Academy and remarked on the work of Benjamin West, Charles B. Lawrence, Rembrandt Peale, and John Neagle. The final two volumes (1829-1841) are labeled "Modelling and Sculpture" and contain long descriptions of Cogdell's methods of modeling, sculpting, and painting. The first opens with correspondence relating to the creation of a bust to memorialize the recently deceased bishop, Right Reverend Theodore Dehon, and its success with the public. Other correspondence pertains to sculptures and paintings commissioned and advice from Washington Allston. Drawings of sculpting instruments are also featured.

Title:
Papers, 1930-1967.
This collection primarily contains correspondence between Eunice Chambers and various scholars, museum directors, libraries, and art collectors between 1930-1967. Most letters pertain to the numerous early American portraits that Chambers collected and resold. She often approached private owners of particular paintings and wrote to them, asking if they would be willing to sell their items. Chambers also actively solicited purchasers for her paintings. Often, she would go to great lengths to thoroughly research the provenance of the works and the history of the subjects of these paintings. Through the help of various libraries and scholars, she was able to attribute several unidentified paintings.

The intaglio engraving on the die obverse depicts a profile bust of Ward Nicholas Boylston with a border inscription: "W. N. BOLYSTON SCHOLÆ MEDICINÆ FUNDATOR". Dr. Marvine; a few small snapshots of Swiss scenes and a large one of a glacier; and one mounted scene of four women in front of a Victorian gingerbread house. Miscellaneous items include Maria S. Case's high school diploma; pages from a souvenir book from the 1889 Paris Exposition; and oversize engravings of prominent Protestant Reformation figures. Individual portrait engravings include European nobility and rulers; popes; Christian saints; artists including Gilbert Stuart; authors including Milton and Shakespeare; scientists, including Sir Isaac Newton; explorers including Sir Walter Raleigh; and philosophers. Some of the engravings may have been removed from "Gallery of Masterpieces of the Old German Wood Engravers," published 1858/1859.

Macbeth Gallery records

Title:
John Hill Morgan Research Files, 1922-1944.
Correspondence, approximately 500 black and white photographs of George Washington portraits, handwritten and typed notes, annotated volumes, printed material, some drafts of Morgan's writings, and copies of diaries and letters document John Hill Morgan's research on portraits of George Washington and other early American works. Papers date from 1920-1944, with a few printed items dating from 1892-1913. The bulk of the collection contains Morgan's research and correspondence for his 1931 book, "The Life Portraits of George Washington and Their Replicas," which he co-authored with Mantle Fielding. Also of note is Morgan's research on Gilbert Stuart, which includes reference materials and his annotated volumes of "Gilbert Stuart: An Illustrated Descriptive List of His Works" (1926) by Lawrence Park. Additional research in the collection concerns portraits of George Washington not included in Morgan's or Park's books, and fakes of early American oils and drawings: Frank Bayley's sale of a Washington portrait later determined to be a copy (in Series IV: Gilbert Stuart), and a series of fake drawings sold in the 1920s and early 1930s by a man using various aliases, including George J. Shepard, Ferdinand Danton and John J. Hughes (in Series V: Shepard-Hughes-Danton Fakes).

Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1927-1943, n.d.
Elizabeth Sage Hare first contacted Carl Zigrosser concerning a possible exhibition of work by D. H. Lawrence at the Weyhe Gallery. She lists Lawrence's paintings and possible prices. Her letters over the years regularly mention A. R. Orage. Later letters give travel advice for the southwest, and touch on Katherine Mansfield, drawings by Thackery, portraits by Gilbert Stuart, arrangements for a travelling exhibition of prints borrowed from Weyhe and her Christmas book lists.
