Gilbert Stuart's Athenaeum portrait of George Washington [graphic] / Heywood, 173 Wash'n. St. [between 1857 and 1859]

The photographer used a dark oval mask to vignette this daguerreotype study of Gilbert Stuart's unfinished painting of George Washington. Stuart's portrait was purchased by the Boston Athenaeum from Stuart's widow in 1828 and remained on view in the Library for fifty years.
