English critic and poet.
Theodore Watts-Dunton was an English poet, novelist, and literary critic.
Theodore Watts-Dunton was an author and critic, perhaps best known for his notable literary friendships. Born in Huntingdonshire and educated at Cambridge, he worked in the office of his solicitor father, and became a solicitor himself; he gave up the practice to devote his life to literature. He wrote literary criticism, poetry, and the popular novel Aylwin, and was a popular columnist noted for his critical acumen. He also formed close friendships with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and later Algernon Charles Swinburne; he acted as Swinburne's agent, and later had the poet move in with him to care for his poor health and alcoholism.
Theodore Watts-Dunton, novelist and critic, was educated at Cambridge and practiced as a solicitor in London. Watts-Dunton published contributions to The Athenaeum; wrote some Shakespearean criticism; wrote a volume of poetry and a novel, Aylwin (1898), which includes a thinly disguised portrait of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He also maintained an interest in gypsy life and edited George Borrow's Lavengro (1893) and The Romany rye (1900).
Theodore Watts-Dunton was an English pre-Raphaelit critic and poet. He is best remembered as the friend and caregiver of poet Algernon Charles Swinburne, whom he rescued from alcoholism.
Theodore Watts-Dunton (1832-1914) was an English critic and poet. He was close friends with English poets Alfred Lord Tennyson, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Algernon Charles Swinburne.
William Michael Rossetti (1829-1919) was an English writer and critic, brother to poets Christina and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and a founding member of the group known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

Letters of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, of his brother, Frederick Tennyson, and of Hallam Tennyson, son of Lord Tennyson. Fourteen letters from Alfred Tennyson to Sophy Rawnsley are largely personal, although one expresses Tennyson's reluctance to become poet laureate. Letters of Hallam Tennyson, most of which are to Theodore Watts-Dunton, contain allusions to the works of his father. Other correspondents include Hall Caine, Sidney J. Low, Lewis Morris, Vernon Randall, M.H. Spielmann, and Theodore Watts-Dunton, writing concerning the publication of articles and reviews on the works of Tennyson and rumors of his possible resignation as poet laureate.

Autograph letters signed from A.C. Swinburne, Henley-on-Thames and West Malvern, to Theodore Watts-Dunton, London [manuscript], 1875-1879.
Letters all addressed "My dear Watts." Most letters make at least passing reference to Swinburne's Study of Shakespeare. (1), written from Holmwood, also mentions coming essays on Elizabethans for the Encyclopedia Britannica. (3) discusses Swinburne's Bothwell. (4), which Swinburne warns is a "most egoistically Shakespearean letter," refers to the Psyche of Molière and Corneille and discusses completing his (Swinburne's) "estimate & analysis of Hamlet" which he declares "the best piece of prose as well as the subtlest & most accurate work of thought I ever achieved." Letters written from Holmwood and Ashfield House. Letters accompanied by envelopes addressed to Watts at 2 Danes Inn, Strand, London and Ivy Lodge, Putney.

The records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933, are comprised mainly of incoming correspondence. Also present are manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, notes, documents, and autobiographical materials of John Lane. In addition, there are readers' reports prepared for manuscripts submitted to the firm between 1894 and 1930. The reports are a valuable source of information on the firm's publishing guidelines and on the kinds of manuscripts submitted during that period.

Autograph letter signed from Algernon Charles Swinburne, Putney S.W., to John Nichol at The College, Glasgow [manuscript], [1879] September 20.
Swinburne writing from Ivy Lodge, Werter Road, Putney S.W., states that his family's home, Holmwood, has been sold and that he is going to live with his friend, W.T. Watts-Dunton in the suburbs. Swinburne speaks of his A Study of Shakespeare (1880), as being so close to publication that he can send Nichol a copy in a few weeks. He hears that Furnivall intends to anticipate it with a pamphlet reprinting his articles from the Spectator (Mr. Swinburne's "Flat Burglary" of Shakespeare, 1879). He also makes slighting remarks of Tennyson. An envelope, postmarked Henley-on-Thames February 1, [18]77, in Swinburne's hand addressed to John Nichol, but in different ink, is inlaid.

Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
The records of the John Lane Company comprise correspondence, readers' reports, manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, documents, and autobiographical materials. Series I of the John Lane Company Records comprises the correspondence and other records reflecting the activities of this firm, its officers and authors from 1856 to 1933, with the majority dating from 1894 to 1930. The correspondence is largely business-related, although the personal correspondence of John Lane is intermixed. Correspondents include Francis P. Barnard, Horace Bleackley, John Buchan, Walter Crane, Arthur Dasent, Richard and Edward Garnett, Kenneth Grahame, Constance Hill, Stephen Leacock, Vernon Lee, Richard Le Gallienne, William J. Locke, Alice and Wilfrid Meynell, Stephen Phillips, Margaret W. Roberts, Clement K. Shorter, Edward P. Stebbing, A. Francis Steuart, Frank Swettenham, Silvanus P. Thompson, Katrina Trask, William Watson, Theodore Watts-Dunton, and M. P. Willcocks. In addition to the large body of incoming correspondence, there is in the series a quantity of intramural correspondence by members of the firm covering the years 1898 to 1920. A small group of financial records and miscellaneous materials complete the series. The smaller Series II "Creative Work" embraces in the main a large number of readers' reports prepared for the firm between 1894 and 1930. There are no reports for the years 1909 to 1914 nor for 1917 to 1920, but otherwise the coverage appears comprehensive. Also present in this subseries is a small number of manuscripts by Lascelles Abercrombie, William Watson and others. Series III contains a small amount of material relating to John Lane the man. A short autobiographical sketch and notes which appear to be the beginning of a projected history of British art in India are contained in the series, along with fragments relating to Lane. As noted above, a significant amount of his personal correspondence is scattered through Series I.
