Poet John Blight was born in Brisbane in 1913. He was twice awarded a 3 year Literary Board Fellowship (1973 and 1977). Other literary awards include, the Myer award (1964) and the Patrick White award (1976). His publications include The old pianist (1945), The two suns met (1954) A bushcomber's diary (1963), Hart (1975) and John Blight; selected poems 1939-1975 (1976).

Poet Mary Gilmore had a long association with the Riverina district. She assisted the foundation Principal of the Wagga Wagga Teacher's College, George Blakemore (d.1958) to assemble this small collection of correspondence and memorabilia.
Kieta House, 5 Bligh St., Sydney, was Dame Mary Gilmore's home.

She began publishing her poetry in 1910 and was outspoken about women's experiences, history, Aborigines and nationalism.
Mrs Epton was given this manuscript as the student chosen to recite the poem in "A night with Australian poets" on 29/9/1930 [sic].

Typescripts (corrected and later version) of The First (Phantom) Coat of Arms. The Coat-of-Arms was thought out by Mary Gilmore's father, and his kinsman Mr Ogilvie of Yugilbar in about the year 1870-71. It was made as the breast-plate of "Bobby, Chief of the Yugilbar Tribe". Breastplates were given as protection by squatters to the Aboriginal people working for them. Her father cut the model from which the copper breast plate was to be copied. Dame Mary Gilmore presented the breast plate to the National Library. Also includes a letter by Mary Gilmore to William Farmer Whyte regarding the breastplate.
