Pudney, John, 1909-1977. Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976).
Title:
Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976).
The John Pudney Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976), include drafts, notes, printer's copies, galleys, research material, notebooks, diaries, and correspondence. Manuscripts for Pudney's poetry collections and chapbooks include Collected Poems, 1957, and Selected Poems, 1967-1973, as well as proofs for Beyond this Disregard (1943), South of Forty (1943), Spandrels: Poems and Ballads (1969), and Living in a One-Sided House (1976). Manuscripts for early and/or unpublished later poems, 1926-1968, are also present. Some materials such as those for Ten Summers: Poems, 1933-1943 include only notes and correspondence. Manuscripts of Pudney's fiction include The Accomplice (1950), Shuffley Wanderers: An Entertainment (1948), and 'Sleadley' (nd). Materials for such works as The Net (1952), Trespass in the Sun (1957), and Home and Away: An Autobiographical Gambit (1960), include only critical notes and correspondence. Nonfiction materials include the proposal and correspondence for The Thomas Cook Story (1953). These materials, which concern the British temperance movement, consist primarily of the mid-19th century letters and ephemera of Thomas Cook, George Cruikshank, and Emily Ellis. Also present are the manuscript for Lewis Carroll and His World (1976), a working notebook, 1947 on the history of the British Air Force, and numerous materials for the revised edition of The Smallest Room (1954, 1959), a humorous history of sanitation and water closets. The Correspondence series, 1937-1962, primarily concerns the revision of The Smallest Room. Other correspondence also describes the nature of Pudney's other literary endeavors and editorial duties, while letters from George Barker and H.E. Bates are of a more personal nature. Other significant correspondents include Kingsley Amis, Malcolm Arnold, John Betjeman, Benjamin Britten, Jocelyn Brooke, Sir Winston Churchill, Cynthia Coville (Secretary to Queen Mary), Oliver Dawney (Secretary to H.M. Queen Elizabeth), C. Day Lewis, T.S. Eliot, John Lehmann, Compton Mackenzie, Wolf Mankowitz, Lady Ottoline Morrell, Laurence Olivier, J.B. Priestly, Frederic Prokosch, Herbert Edward Read, Michael Redgrave, Vita Sackville-West, Edith Sitwell, Stephen Spender, Henry Treece, and Evelyn Waugh.

Tom Stoppard Papers
Title:
Tom Stoppard Papers
The Stoppard papers consist of typescripts, holograph manuscripts, computer printouts, page proofs, galley proofs, printed pages, theatre programs, photographs, photographic negatives, advertising material, clippings of articles and reviews, correspondence, dust jackets, and watercolor sketches by unknown artists, all ranging in date from 1939 to 2000 (bulk 19760-2000). Nearly all of Stoppard's major plays, screenplays, teleplays, and radio plays are represented in some form, along with many of his lesser-known works and some that were never produced. Stoppard's short stories are not well documented in the collection, although his only novel, LORD MALQUIST AND MR. MOON, is represented. For many works, material from first or early drafts through various revisions, production, further revisions, and publication are present. Page proofs, galleys, and typesetting copy typescripts show changes made in subsequent editions after the initial publication of a work. Correspondence in the collection relates almost exclusively to Stoppard's career and is primarily incoming correspondence. Significant correspondents include Ed Berman, Dirk Bogarde, John Boorman, Noel Carr, Michael Codron, Guy Dumur, Kenneth Ewing, Faber and Faber, Lady Antonia Fraser, Michael Frayn, David Hare, Glynn Boyd Harte, Michael Horovitz, Ilya Levin, Bryan Magee, Trevor Nunn, Laurence Olivier, Harold Pinter, Ned Sherrin, Anthony C.H. Smith, and Kenneth Tynan. Materials relating to Stoppard's involvement in human rights and charitable organizations are also present, as are photographs and personal memorabilia.

Williams, Tennessee, 1911-1983. Tennessee Williams Collection, 1880-1993 (bulk 1930s-1970s).
Title:
Tennessee Williams Collection, 1880-1993 (bulk 1930s-1970s).
Typescript, composite and holograph manuscripts, correspondence, bibliographies, clippings, scrapbooks, academic papers, business records, galley proofs, photographs, and artworks document Tennessee Williams' life, work, family, and friends from 1880-1993. While the dates of the collection span from 1880 to 1993, the bulk range from the mid 1930s to the mid 1970s. The earliest item is a letter to Williams' grandmother, Rosina Otte Dakin, and virtually all material dated prior to 1930 relates to Williams' family. Autograph letter signed : Renishaw Hall [near Sheffield], to Jane Clark, 1954 June 26.
Noting that being made a Dame has inspired all her acquaintances to tell her all about their marital troubles; remarking on a play based on her and Osbert; mentioning mutual acquaintances; remarking that she dreads curtsying to the Queen during her decoration ceremony, noting "I have such bad arthritis I can hardly bend my knees, and either I shall fall at the Queen's feet, or else ... I shall bring her down with me in a kind of death-grapple!!!" Mentioning that she will give a performance of the Façade on Saturday; hoping that Sir Laurence nd Lady Olivier will play King Henry and Anne Boleyn in the film.

Title:
Studio archive, 1904-1980 (bulk 1936-1955).
Contains records documenting every aspect of David O. Selznick's Hollywood studio operations including script development, production, publicity, finances, and distribution. The records follow film's pioneer days in New York through the heyday of the studio system in Hollywood, to the rise of television. Besides Selznick's independent productions such as A Star is Born (1937), Gone with the Wind (1939), and Rebecca (1940), the archive documents his association with three major studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount, and RKO. Arranged according to the departmental division of Selznick's studio, the archive traces the evolution of films from story purchase through script development, casting, design, production, exploitation, distribution, and reissue. Though most of the materials document Selznick's independent career, there are also records concerning his personal affairs, his father's career, as well as films Selznick developed but never produced. The archive touches on virtually every major Hollywood person, studio, and event of the early 20th century. The archive is highlighted by David O. Selznick's personal files, found in Series I, and arranged in 28 sub-subseries. These records document Selznick's personal involvement in every aspect of his business and chronicle his life. Found in this subseries are clippings, confidential and personal files, coproduction and loanout files, correspondence, calendars, financial and legal files, interoffice files, MGM, Paramount, and RKO files, Myron Selznick estate files, photographs, safe deposit files, story files, talent files, and writers files.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Title:
B. J. Simmons & Co. Costume Design Records, 1878-1969 (bulk 1900-1960).
The bulk of the B. J. Simmons & Co. Costume Design Records (the Costume Design Portfolios series) comprises 34,000 costume designs, dress plots, and related materials produced or collected by the firm between 1878 and 1969 (bulk 1910-1960). Over 1,100 theatrical productions and 116 films are represented, including works by Shakespeare, Shaw, and Gilbert and Sullivan; performances by John Gielgud (Hamlet, 1944) and Laurence Olivier (as Romeo, 1935); numerous Ivor Novello musicals; Oscar Asche's blockbuster production of the musical Chu Chin Chow (1916); original designs for Peter Pan (1904) and Ben-Hur (1902); and British films such as Olivier's Henry V and Things to Come. The costume designers Percy Anderson, Attilio Comelli, and Sers are particularly well represented. The Production Portfolios comprise 227 folio scrapbooks of souvenir programs, clipped reviews and articles from entertainment periodicals, and photographs showing illustrations of stage and film costumes, often with accompanying textual descriptions or reviews. Over 8,000 productions between 1880 and 1959 are represented, most from London or Paris. Although many productions were dressed by Simmons, other stagings are also documented, allowing researchers to compare several presentations of the same play. When published sources were not sufficient to meet the requirements of a particular theatrical production or commission, designers conducted research at libraries and museums. Over time, Simmons compiled a vast visual archive of tracings, clippings, photographs, postcards, and other ephemeral materials. The Geographic Costume Portfolios contain more than 10,000 items arranged in meticulous order by country (from Abyssinia to Yugoslavia) and time period. England and France are especially well represented. After the initial production and sale of costumes, Simmons often leased their garments to amateur dramatic societies and subsequent professional productions. The records for this part of their enterprise are found in the Business Records series, as are other documents concerning the management of a costume house.

1907-1983. Papers. Series I. Correspondence
Title:
1907-1983. Papers. Series I. Correspondence
Includes correspondence, with various enclosures (clippings, photographs, financial or legal documents, script proposals, etc.), from Miss Swanson's family, friends, business associates, acquaintances, and fans, spanning many notables from numerous fields of endeavor. As many relationships overlapped personal, career, business, and other interests, this series should by no means be regarded as purely personal correspondence. The earliest correspondence in the collection is from her family. Most 1920s and 1930s correspondence is film related and located in Series II., Career, especially in the United Artists subseries. The 1940s are most prominently represented in the Multiprises, Inc. subseries of Series III., Business Interests. Among the correspondents are: Roy E. Aitken, Michelle Farmer Amon, Kenneth Anger, Robert Balzer, Tallulah Bankhead, Richard Barthelmess, Earl Blackwell, Virginia Bowker, Charles Brackett, Lewis L. Bredin, Harry A. Bruno, Carol Burnett, George Bush, Francis X. Bushman, Richard E. Byrd, Walter Byron, James Cagney, Eddie Cantor, Carol Channing, Maurice Chevalier, Henri Coanda, Ronald Colman, Noel Coward, Fleur Cowles, Joan Crawford, George Cukor, Michael Curtiz, Gloria Daly, Raymond W. Daum, William M. Davey, Marion Davies, Cecil B. DeMille, Indira Devi, Thomas E. Dewey, Theodore Dreiser, William Dufty, Alan Dwan, Nelson Eddy, David Edstrom, Mamie Doud Eisenhower, Harlan Ellison, Douglas Fairbanks, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Michael Farmer, José Ferrer, Hy Gardner, George, Duke of Kent, George Gershwin, Margaret Ghika, Lillian Gish, Hubert de Givenchy, Elinor Glyn, Edmund Goulding, Gladys Griffith, Alec Guinness, Edmund Gwenn, Forrest Halsey, Oscar Hammerstein II, Helen Hayes, Edith Head, William Randolph Hearst, Ethel Helmsing, Katharine Hepburn, Conrad Hilton, Prince Franz Hohenlohe, Bob Hope, Hedda Hopper, Edward Everett Horton, L. Ron Hubbard, René Hubert, William Bradford Huie, George S. Kaufman, Edward Moore Kennedy, Harold J. Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, Joseph P. Kennedy, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, Jean Kerr, Ed Koch, Kathryn Kuhlman, Michio Kushi, Henri de La Falaise, Henri Langlois, Beatrice LaPlante, Rod LaRocque, Jesse L. Lasky, Evelyn Laye, Vivien Leigh, Mervyn LeRoy, Clare Boothe Luce, Joel McCrea, Roddy McDowall, Frances Norton Manning, Arlette Marchal, Stanley Marcus, Frances Marion, Gene Markey, Herbert Marshall, James Michener, Marshall Neilan, David Niven, Richard M. Nixon, Merle Oberon, Laurence Olivier, Louella Parsons, Mary Pickford, ZaSu Pitts, Rosa Ponselle, Harold Prince, Ram Gopal, Ronald Reagan, Ginger Rogers, Eleanor Roosevelt, Adela Rogers St. Johns, Elsa Schiaparelli, Gustave Schirmer, David O. Selznick, Joseph Sharfshin, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, R. Lawrence Siegel, Herbert K. Somborn, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward Steichen, Preston Sturges, Ed Sullivan, Joseph Patrick Swanson, Joseph Theodore Swanson, Bess Truman, Valentina, Erich Von Stroheim, Raoul Walsh, Barbara Walters, LeRoy P. ("Sport") Ward, Clifton Webb, Orson Welles, Dan Werlé, Billy Wilder, Lois Wilson, Walter Winchell, Sam Wood, Adelaide Woodruff, Florenz Ziegfeld, Adolph Zukor, and others. Among some of the more intriguing pieces of correspondence are: a letter from a twelve year old John F. Kennedy, thanking Miss Swanson for a Christmas present; a signed, self-caricature note from George Gershwin; René Hubert's voluminous, illustrated correspondence; early papers of Herbert K. Somborn's company, Equity Pictures; and a series of mail from Kenneth Anger, which arose from a lawsuit involving his book Hollywood Babylon. There is relatively little correspondence with Joseph P. Kennedy; most of it is found in Series II., Career, and it is generally characterized by business dealings. Also included is a large group of fan mail, and fans' addresses kept on index cards, with carbons of responses, or notations that photographs or letters were sent, or perhaps a phone call was made.

Title:
Moss Hart and Kitty Carlisle papers, 1922-1962, 1988.
Papers of Moss Hart (1904-1961) and Kitty Carlisle (1910-2007), a noted playwright-director and his wife, an actress and television personality. Manuscript and published copies of Hart's major works, some of which were written in collaboration with George S. Kaufman and Irving Berlin, include the plays "The American Way" (1939), "Christopher Blake" (1946), "The Climate of Eden" (1952), "George Washington Slept Here" (1940), "Jubilee" (1935), "Lady in the Dark" (1941), "Light Up the Sky" (1948), "The Man Who Came to Dinner" (1939), "Merrily We Roll Along" (1934), "Once in a Lifetime" (1930), "You Can't Take It With You" (1936), and "Winged Victory" (1943); the motion pictures "The Eddie Duchin Story" (Col., 1954), "Gentleman's Agreement" (20th Century-Fox, 1947), and "A Star is Born" (Warner Bros., 1954); and his autobiography "Act One" (1959). There is also a script for "My Fair Lady" (1956), which Hart directed on Broadway. For several of the above titles there are also notes, business records, clippings, and photographs. Of more personal interest are two diaries, the first kept by Hart during a world trip in 1935 while he wrote "Jubilee," and the second a journal of his theatrical activities and personal life during 1953 and 1954. Related to Kitty Carlisle's stage and screen career are clipping scrapbooks, 1932-1946 (on microfilm), photographs, and a draft version of her autobiography "Kitty" (1988). On film are the Harts' appearances at the 1961 Academy Award ceremonies and on "Person to Person" (CBS) in 1959. The tape recordings concern a 1960 discussion of Broadway musicals between Hart and Brooks Atkinson.

Title:
Donald Wolfit Papers, 1803-1984 (bulk 1937-68).
The bulk of the Donald Wolfit Papers (the Theater Papers series) comprises promptbooks, scripts, costume and scenic designs, music, plots, property letters, and other materials for thirty-nine plays, many by Shakespeare, and for a small number of recitals and radio broadcasts. Generally, this series documents Wolfit's role as actor-manager and the contributions of the designer Ernest Stern and Wolfit's music advisor Rosabel Watson. The series also includes administrative and financial records, publicity materials, and world tour files. The latter pertain to Wolfit's and Rosalind Iden's trips abroad in 1959 and 1960 and contain significant quantities of letters from Wolfit's agent John Coast and the Kenyan promoter Donovan Maule. The Correspondence series illuminates Wolfit's artistic choices and opinions, and the myriad details involved in managing a theater company. Notable correspondents are Felix Aylmer, Winston Clewes, Edward Gordon Craig, Basil Dean, John Gielgud, M.C. Glasgow, Tyrone Guthrie, Hugh Hunt, John Maynard Keynes, Hugh Linstead, Laurence Olivier, Percival M. Selby, George Bernard Shaw, and J.C. Trewin. Subjects include the Actors's Equity strike, the National Theatre, and Wolfit's dispute with the Old Vic. The Works series contains holograph manuscripts, typescripts, and notes for nearly forty speeches, lectures, poems, and short fiction and nonfiction pieces. The Miscellaneous series holds memorabilia and items of a personal nature. The Works by Other Authors series gathers together materials relating to works about Wolfit, including biographies by Ronald Harwood and George W.Y Porter, and works which were sent to him by his correspondents.

The Lunts' personal correspondence provides a virtual "who's who" in the arts and entertainment industry in the first half of the 20th century. Letters abound from such prominent literary figures as Enid Bagnold, S. N. Behrman, John Mason Brown, Noel Coward, Edna Ferber, Terence Rattigan, Robert Sherwood, Booth Tarkington, Thornton Wilder, and Alexander Woollcott. Theater personalities such as Maxwell Anderson, Cecil Beaton, Hugh Beaumont, Russel Crouse, John Gielgud, Helen Hayes, Vivien Leigh, Howard Lindsay, Cathleen Nesbitt, Laurence Olivier, and John Wilson are represented as well. Other well-known figures are represented in smaller amounts. Although the Lunts starred in separate productions until the early 1920's, they achieved their greatest fame after 1924 when they appeared together in "The Guardsman." The majority of the production information in the collection dates from that time until the Lunts' last Broadway appearance in 1958, and includes newspaper and magazine clippings of reviews, advertisements, and related publicity, as well as playbills and programs. There is similar material from the 1919 production of "Clarence," which launched Lunt to stardom. The collection includes scripts from the following productions: "Beverly's Balance" (1915), "Iphigenia in Aulis" (1915), "Clarence" (1919), "Banco" (1922), "Outward Bound" (1924), "The Guardsman" (1924), "The Taming of the Shrew" (1935), "Idiot's Delight" (1936), "The Pirate" (1942), "O Mistress Mine" (1946), "I Know My Love" (1949), and "Anastasia" (TV - 1967). Tape-recorded material includes "The White Cliffs," a 1941 radio production; a performance of "The Guardsman"; and reminiscences of the actress Ellen Terry by Sybil Thorndike. There are video cassettes from the 1980 television documentary "The Lunts: A Life in the Theatre" and the 1981 "Bunny Raasch Special." Also present is a film of the 1963 television production "The Old Lady Shows Her Medals." Extensive production and personal photographs are included in the collection as well as home movies.

Lucille Lortel papers
Title:
Lucille Lortel papers
The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

Title:
Records of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. 1921 - 2008. Audio Recordings. 1945 - 1965. THE ACTOR
This program explores the question: What is an actor? Various actors and actresses, such as Sir Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Lionel and Ethel Barrymore, Tallulah Bankhead and Humphrey Bogart discuss their views or deliver recitations from their most famous performances. Their performances are then analyzed by authorities such as Broadway producer, Mike Todd, press agent, Dick Maney, anthropologist, Doctor Hortense Powdermaker, psychoanalyst John Gustin and publisher Leo Schull. William Saroyan, syndicated columnists Leonard Lyons and Hy Gardner, Rocky Graziano, Peter Ustinov, Dore Schary, Alfred Hitchcock, Walter Kerr, John Carradine, Michael Redgrave, Sir Ralph Richardson, Ralph Bellamy and Joseph Mankiewicz, give their opinions on the thespian fraternity.
