The Emergency Committee in Aid of Displaced Foreign Scholars was formed in New York City in 1933 by American academicians for the purpose of employing refugee German scholars in American institutions. Many of these refugee scholars were Jews displaced by the National Socialist government. The collection consists chiefly of grant files on refugee scholars who applied for aid from the Committee. The records also include correspondence with other refugee and philanthropic organizations and with the educational institutions which accepted refugee scholars.

The Helen and Kurt Wolff Papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, printed material, and personal papers documenting the professional lives of Helen and Kurt Wolff through their affiliations with Kurt Wolff Verlag, Pantheon Books, and Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. Series I, Correspondence, consists predominantly of professional correspondence with authors, publishers, and translators, though correspondence can also be found with friends, editors, literary agents, periodicals, and organizations. There are authors' files for Joy Adamson, Hermann Broch, Max Frisch, Günter Grass, Julien Green, Donald Harington, Uwe Johnson, Carl Gustav Jung and his editor Aniela Jaffé, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Konrad Lorenz, Jan Morris, Iris Origo, Amos Oz, Boris Pasternak, and Georges Simenon. Other noteworthy files exist for Hannah Arendt, Kurt von Faber du Faur, and translator Ralph Manheim. In addition to correspondence with various European publishers, there are large files of internal Pantheon Books and Harcourt Brace Jovanovich correspondence, and with individual colleagues, including William Jovanovich, Kyrill Schabert, and Wolfgang Sauerländer. Series II, Kurt Wolff Verlag, consists of a small group of chiefly printed ephemera, as well as a list of KWV titles. Series III, Pantheon Books Papers, is subdivided for writings, financial and legal documents, and other papers. There are drafts of manuscripts, including corrected typescript carbons of Jung's Memories, Dreams, Reflections, marked printed versions of non-English language editions, reader reports, and printed publicity and reviews. Financial and legal documents include contracts, minutes, and statements and auditors' reports. Other papers include lists of Pantheon titles from 1946-1961. Series IV, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Papers, is subdivided for writings, financial and legal documents, and other papers. Materials include drafts, marked printed versions of non-English language editions, reader reports, printed publicity and reviews, photographs, and lists. There are corrected drafts of manuscripts by Bryher, Günter Grass, Uwe Johnson, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Henry Michaux, and others. Financial records include contracts and royalty statements from 1981-1993. Series V, Writings, is subdivided for the wiritings of Kurt Wolff, Helen Wolff, and others. There are several essays by Kurt Wolff on writers and publishing that appeared as radio broadcasts in the early 1960s. Subjects include Expressionism, Carl Sternheim, Franz Kafka, Karl Kraus, Lou Andreas-Salomé, and Franz Werfel. The writings of Helen Wolff include corrected typescript drafts of articles on publishing and translating and drafts of commemorative reminiscences on authors, friends, and colleagues, including translator Richard Winston. The writings of others include clippings and printed versions of articles. Series VI, Subject Files, consists chiefly of clippings on writers and publishers and Series VII, Personal Papers, consists chiefly of printed ephemera.

The Eleanor Clark papers consist of writings, correspondence, and personal papers documenting the life and work of the writer Eleanor Clark. The writings feature notes, drafts, proofs, and printed materials relating to Clark's published works of fiction and non-fiction, from drafts of what would become Baldur's Gate, dating from the mid 1930s, to drafts of her last novel, Camping Out (1986). In addition, there are drafts and printed versions of numerous published and unpublished shorter works, including short stories, essays, poems, plays, speeches, readings, and book reviews. Correspondence in the collection consists chiefly of incoming letters from family, friends, writers, editors and publishers, and educational and cultural institutions. Larger correspondence files may be found for Clark's husband, Robert Penn Warren, her mother, her two children, Gabriel and Rosanna Warren, and Louis MacNeice, Katherine Anne Porter, and Muriel Rukeyser, among others. Some of Torberg's letters to Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel have been published in the collection Liebste Freundin und Alma: Briefwechsel mit Alma Mahler-Werfel, nebst einigen Briefen an Franz Werfel ed. David Axmann and Marietta Torberg (Langen Müller, 1987). Included are a number of typescripts and a clipping of various writings of Torberg, both prose and poetry. Among the latter are the following: a typed statement by Torberg (apparently prepared in the context of a legal dispute) detailing the negotiations that had led to the sale of the film script "Love and Hatred of Zorah Pasha" (co-written by Torberg and Werfel) to Sam Spiegel and Boris Morros of Twentieth Century Fox, with George Marton acting as an agent; a typescript of the memorial speech (Gedenkrede) that Torberg held about Werfel at the Austrian Institute in New York City, in 1945 (he mentions in his letter to Hiltbrunner that it was published in the German literary periodical Neue Rundschau); and clippings (2) of an essay about Alma Mahler, "Ein Denkmal ihrer selbst," published in Süddeutsche Zeitung, just after Alma's death.

Title: Steven Schuyler papers relating to Kurt Wolff and Hermann Broch, 1943-1991.

Original gift, received in 2006, features two drafts of Schuyler's doctoral thesis (entitled Kurt Wolff and Hermann Broch: Publisher and Author in Exile) for the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. There is one typescript photocopy of an undated draft, with corrections, annotations, and six leaves of notes by Helen Wolff, and one typescript photocopy, dated May 1984, of the final draft. Schuyler's thesis discusses Wolff as founder of Pantheon Books and publisher of European and émigré work in translation, and the translation and publication of Broch's Der Tod des Vergil (The Death of Virgil). The drafts are accompanied by one typescript carbon letter from Schuyler to Helen Wolff, Kurt Wolff's wife and publishing partner, and three audio cassettes. In his letter, dated May 29, 1984, Schuyler responds to Wolff's comments on his thesis. The audio recordings, dated August 21, 1979, include interviews with Helen Wolff. Addition, received in 2008, consists of correspondence and research notes relating to Schuyler's thesis. Along with additional correspondence with Helen Wolff, there is correspondence with literature scholars, writers, publishers, and research institutions, including Joseph Campbell, Karl Siegfried Guthke, Roman Jakobson, Wulf Köpke, Paul Michael Lützeler, Hans Sahl, and Christian Wolff.
