The Bentley Papers span the period 1666 to 1819 and reflect the life and interests of the Rev. William Bentley. There are 13 volumes of diaries, 1785-1819. The diary for 1811-1815 was written in an old volume which contained accounts, 1684-1703, of George Corwin, Jr. ( - ), and entries for the settlement of the estate of George Corwin ( - ). There is correspondence, 1783-1819, mostly addressed to Bentley and including letters from John Adams (1735-1826) and Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) concerning the Mecklenberg County (N.C.) Declaration of Independence, as well as a folder of correspondence, 1813-1815, with Bentley's nephew William Bentley Fowle (1795-1865). Other principal correspondents include Joshua Bentley ( - ), John Eliot (1754-1813), James Freeman (1759-1835), William Logan ( - ), Michael Walsh (1763-1840), and James Winthrop (1752-1821). The collection also includes commonplace books, lists of titles in Bentley's library, sermons, 1808-1813, and financial papers, 1783-1818. There are notes and notebooks on religion, philosophy, meteorology, history, linguistics, natural history, and a variety of other topics as well as a folder of poetry copied by Bentley. There are papers collected by Bentley concerning his parish, the East Church of Salem, Mass., and a variety of other records collected by him. These include land deeds, a list of students, 1730, a roll of soldiers at Louisbourg, 1745, correspondence of Thomas Hutchinson (1711-1780), 1753 and 1770 ships' manifests, an account of a sailor captured near Yemen, c. 1812, and other records.

Arabic letters, legal documents, historical or religious commentaries and devotional literature associated with American and English missionaries and scholars such as William Jenks, founder of the American Oriental Society, William Bentley, Unitarian clergyman and poet, William Bentley Fowle, Rev. Thomas Laurie, the traveller, William Jones, British orientalist, Isaac Bird and Samuel Harris, "the Bostonian." Some of these individuals visited the East and collected or copied original manuscripts which they sent to Boston for study or publication. Collection includes letters of Assad Shidiack, the Maronite apostate, documents relating to the brig Telemachus and the schooner Rajah, Bengali accounts, a letter of Herschel Borofsky "a Polish Jew in prison" (1824), a Sanscrit text recounting a military invasion of Ceylon and manuscript and printed material relating to the China trade (ca. 1821). The collection as a whole shows the important ties, commercial and intellectual, which existed between New England and the East in the early 19th century. The collection has not been fully analyzed. The Athenaeum also owns a related collection of ms. copies of the Koran, entered separately.

This collection of papers, for the period 1803 to 1825, is miscellaneous in nature and contains personal, professional, and military correspondence. The personal correspondence includes a dinner invitation, dated [23 December 1803], to Levi Lincoln (1849-1820); a letter, dated 1 July 1812, to William Bentley (1759-1819) regarding Dearborn's reservations as to the appointment of James Bowers ( -1834) as a chaplin in the army; and a long, interesting letter, dated Sault de St. Marie 1st August 1825, from his grandson-in-law (and great-nephew) Greenlief Dearborn (1786-1846). In it, Greenlief writes, among other topics, of a trial held in Mackinaw, Mich., of five Indians of the Chippewa Nation "... for the murders of a party of traders on the Mississippi last year." There is one letter of a professional nature from Martin Kingsley (1754-1835) and James Campbell (1761-1826), of Harrington, District of Maine, recommending Jeremiah O'Brien (1778-1858) as a replacement to fill the vacancy of the Office of Collector for the Port of Machias in the County of Washington due to the death of the former collector, and O'Brien's uncle, Jeremiah O'Brien (1740-1818). The remaining four letters all deal with some aspect of Dearborn's military career. One regarding sheep, one regarding bonds and oaths, and one regarding transportation of men and baggage. There is also a letter of introduction, dated 14 June 1813, from Thomas P. Baldwin ( - ).

Address on Reverend William Bentley's mission to shut-ins, his perseverance, and the Dr. Bentley substitute for the sunday school. First given from memory on November 26, 1897 before the Women's Alliance of the Second Church, Salem (Mass.) and immediate after prepared this manuscript. She was in the East Church, then at the corner of Essex and Hardy Streets, on the Sunday when Bentley closed the service and started for Marblehead (Mass.) to help save the Constitution (Frigate).

William Bentley (1759-1819) was a Unitarian clergyman in Salem, Mass., a journalist for the and the a book and coin collector, and a scholar. Bentley served as the minister of the East Church in Salem from 1784 until his death in 1819, and was a prominent presence both in Salem and in the larger intellectual community. This collection contains a selection of correspondence sent to Bentley between 1783 and 1815, primarily by his friend and fellow Harvard alumnus, James Winthrop (1752-1821). The letters from Winthrop typically reflect Winthrop's research interests, his and Bentley's mutual interest in books and numismatics, and offer sporadic information about political and local events. The collection offers a resource for studying the informational channels among New England intellectuals in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and reflect Bentley's efforts to use correspondence to locate political, scientific, and literary information, engage in debate, participate in the book trade, and collect content for his newspaper columns. This collection of thirteen letters consists of ten typescript copies of letters of Alden in the AAS Records, 1812- and the William Bentley Papers, 1666-1819. Alden's letters to AAS concern his membership and interest in Society activities, while the letters to Bentley are those from the President of the fledgling Allegheny College to an interested Trustee. Another letter, dated 11 November 1815, is a typescript of an original owned by Allegheny College and concerns the gift of James Winthrop (1752-1821) to the college of his personal library. An original letter from Alden to William Bentley Fowle (1795-1865), dated 26 February 1822, concerns Alden's desire to obtain biographical information on William Bentley (1759-1819) for inclusion in Alden's projected history of Allegheny College. The collection also contains a photocopy of a typescript "Circular Letter, respectfully addressed to every gentleman of science in the state of New-Jersey," dated 1 January 1811, which concerns Alden's quest for information on the state of New Jersey for inclusion in Alden's projected history of New Jersey.
