Keppel took a personal interest in Zigrosser, and their letters cover Zigrosser's employment at Keppel & Co., Zigrosser's stand on conscientious objection during World War I (Keppel was with the War Department at the time), print purchases made by Keppel while he was with the Carnegie Corporation of New York, and Zigrosser's books. Title:
Ralph Bunche papers, 1922-1988.
Personal papers, family and general correspondence, writings, field notes and research materials, working papers, office files and printed matter documenting Ralph Bunche's personal life and professional career, from his enrollment at the University of California to his retirement in 1971. Family papers (1922-1988) comprise personal papers of Ralph Bunche and Ruth Harris Bunche. The Ralph Bunche subseries includes educational, medical and financial papers, passports, personal and family documents. The Ruth Harris Bunche subseries consists of general and professional correspondence, speeches and miscellaneous writings, certificates and awards, scrapbooks and printed matter. The Correspondence series (1929-1971) is divided into family and general correspondence. Family correspondence consists of letters exchanged between Ralph Bunche and his wife from 1929 to 1944, letters from his aunts Nelle and Ethel Johnson, his sister Grace Robinson, his mother Olive, correspondence with his children, and occasional correspondence with other relatives. General correspondence consists of three separate files: correspondence from his residency in London in 1937, correspondence relating to his retirement in 1971, and occasional correspondence between 1928 and 1971. Noted correspondents include Walter White, Alain Locke, George Padmore, T.R. Makonnen and Eric Williams. Writings are divided into two subseries: conferences and academic writings, and addresses and articles. The first subseries consists primarily of essays, articles and reviews written by Bunche, in addition to research notes and typescripts of his master's thesis "the Political Theory of Sir Robert Filmer" and his doctoral dissertation "French Administration in Togoland and Dahomey." The second subseries consists of files of Bunche's handwritten and typescript articles and speeches from 1951 to 1969. Addressed mainly to academic and university audiences and to civic and international gatherings, they deal mainly with issues of world peace and his role at the United Nations. Also included are eulogies, television interviews and acceptance speeches for prizes, awards and honorary degrees conferred on him. The South Africa Reearch Trip series (1937) consists of letters of recommendation, field notes and correspondence with the State Department, South African officials and the Rosenwald Fund. The Howard University series (1928-1941) is divided into correspondence and office files, and includes class syllabi, students' examinations and grades, lecture notes, reports and printed matter. Correspondents include Saul Bellow, Rupert Emerson, Melville Herskovits, Benjamin Azikiwe, and many of his colleagues: E.P. Davis, Emmett Dorsey, Mordecai Johnson, Charles H. Wesley, Frederick Wilinson and Eric Williams. The Carnegie-Myrdal series consists of correspondence, draft manuscripts and typescripts of research memoranda written by Bunche, as well as interviews, reports and field notes prepared by Bunche, Myrdal and a staff of assistants and collaborators. These materials are arranged into five subseries: research and administrative correspondence and memoranda; research memoranda prepared by Bunche; reports, field notes and research materials filed by the name of their creators; reports, field notes and research materials filed by city, by county or by state; and printed matter. Principal contributors to this series, in addition to Bunche, include George Stoney, Whilhelmina Jackson, Gunnar Myrdal and James Jackson. Major surveys were conducted in the states of Missouri, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Ohio, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Materials collected include voting charts, annotated city maps indicating segregated boundaries and campaign literature. The United Nations Trusteeship Council series (1946-1950) consists of working papers and mimeographed reports of the Fourth Committee of the United Nations' General Assembly, also known as the Trusteeship Council. A sub-committee of seventeen members was appointed in 1946 to examine and make recommendations to the Council on trusteeship agreements proposed for the mandated territories by the corresponding colonial governments. Working papers leading to the formation of the Sub-Committee, proceedings of its 26 meetings, the proposed agreements, in addition to amendments and modifications, statements and resolutions from the various delegations, are included in the files of the Sub-Committee. A major part of this series consists of the complete verbatim records of the 81 meetings of the Trusteeship Council at its sixth session in 1950. Also included are petitions from civic and political associations in the mandated territories challenging colonial rule on such issues as forced labor, abuse of authority and trade-union restrictions. The Awards, Membership and Tributes series (1927-1984) consists of correspondence, certificates, programs, invitations and souvenir journals of luncheons, testimonial dinners and banquets held in Bunche's honor, in addition to documents relating to various memorial tributes and commemorative events following his death. The Scrapbooks series (1930-1972) consists of: the Howard University Scrapbook of memorabilia and press clippings (1930-1939); the Ruth Bunche Art Student Scrapbook (1934-1935); the Voices ofAmerican Liberty Scrapbook presented to Ralph Bunche at Lord and Taylor's Nineteenth Annual Luncheon on March 18, 1956; the Ralph Bunche Hall Scrpabook of the University of California at Los Angeles; the Jane Bunche Pierce Memorial Scrapbook (1966); the Ralph Bunche Memorial Scrapbook (1971-1972), consisting of condolence letters, telegrams and sympathy cards, obituaries, memorial tributes and printed matter; and the Peace Form One Scrapbook marking the dedication ceremony of the Ralph Bunche Memorial Monument near the United Nations. The Printed Matter series (1931-1971) relates primarily to Ralph Bunche, his family life and his career at the United Nations.

Bourne, Randolph Silliman, 1886-1918. Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1911-1919.
Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1911-1919.
Randolph Silliman Bourne and Carl Zigrosser were friends at Columbia, summered together in the country, and shared an apartment in New York after their graduation. A falling-out between the two ended the touching closeness displayed in this correspondence. Bourne's letters reflect their shared interests and are a restless and eager record of 4 years of their lives. Topics covered include music, social evenings, nature and hiking, college politics at the Columbia Monthly, evening speakers at Columbia, art and the philosophy of color, Edward Murray, Rockwell Kent, Joyce Kilmer, Woodrow Wilson, possible articles for publication, college gossip about mutual friends, Frederick Keppel and Bernard Shaw. Many of the letters were written during Bourne's year in Europe (1913-1914). Besidesdescribing the countryside and characterizing nations Bourne writes about town planning and social welfare, a lecture by G.K. Chesterton, social movements in England, Sylvia Pankhurst, Havelock Ellis, Walt Whitman, women that he meets and his reaction to them, impressions of Paris over London, and the 1914 General Strike in Italy. There are few letters after his return to the United States (a time when he and Zigrosser lived together and then parted company), most are written from Dublin, N.H. and tell of meeting William Merritt Chase and Edwin Arlington Robinson at Amy Lowell's and life in that intellectual circle. This correspondence also contains a brief and biting note by Carl Zigrosser describing Bourne's funeral, and a folder containing published works by Bourne and appreciations written upon his death.

Richard T. Ely papers, 1812-1963 (bulk 1882-1939)
Title:
Richard T. Ely papers, 1812-1963 (bulk 1882-1939)
Papers, dating mainly 1882-1939, of Richard Ely, an economist, educator, reformer, and faculty member at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Wisconsin, and Northwestern University. Also included are genealogical information and records of several academic, patriotic, and reform organizations which Ely helped found, including the American Association for Agricultural Legislation, American Bureau of Industrial Research, Christian Social Union, Ely Economic Foundation, Institute for Economic Research, Institute for Research in Land Economics and Public Utilities, League to Enforce Peace-Wisconsin Branch, and Wisconsin Loyalty Legion. During his long career Ely made numerous contributions to American life and also had significant contacts in Europe and in Japan. As a social scientist and an educator he was greatly influenced by the German higher education system. In this country he pioneered the seminar method of graduate education, was a founder of the American Economic Association, a frequent lecturer at Chautauqua, and a symbol of academic freedom. He established the areas of labor economics, labor history, agricultural economics, conservation, real estate, and land economics as fields of academic interest. Ely corresponded with hundreds of individuals including many prominent in the social sciences and education, in the field of business, and in Wisconsin political, educational, and business circles. A prolific author and editor, Ely had frequent contacts with publishers and editors, especially those at the Macmillan Company. Ely is also widely recognized as a key figure in the development of the reform ideology which characterized the Progressive Era. He had many contacts with prominent political, reform, religious, labor, and socialist leaders. Ely received and wrote thousands of letters during his career; selected correspondents are noted in the subject headings below and a correspondent index was compiled for inclusion in the microfilm edition. Additions received in 1991 consist primarily of family correspondence and miscellaneous professional papers.

Boas, Franz, 1858-1942. Correspondence, 1862-1942.
Title:
Correspondence, 1862-1942.
There is material in this collection other than correspondence, as well as letters other than professional in nature, but the collection does bring together the overwhelming correspondence that Boas carried on with his colleagues in anthropology, as well as with those in the other social sciences and sciences. This correspondence is rich as a source for twentieth-century historians interested in "radical" social causes, since Boas was a socialist and an outspoken voice for progressive social causes.

Franz Boas Papers, 1862-1942
Title:
Franz Boas Papers 1862-1942
During the half century leading up to the Second World War, Franz Boas helped to define academic anthropology in the United States. Trained as a geographer at the University of Heidelberg, Boas worked initially on the Inuit of Baffin Island and subsequently on the cultures of the Indians of the Northwest Pacific Coast, becoming a leading figure in American anthropology by the first decade of the twentieth century. As Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University, Boas made significant theoretical contributions to ethnology, linguistics, and physical anthropology, helping to ingrain the four fields approach in his discipline and introducing the concept of cultural relativism into wide currency. He was, as well, a committed Socialist and an ardent opponent of both racism and fascism. This collection includes correspondence that Boas carried on with his colleagues in anthropology, as well as with those in the other social sciences and sciences. This correspondence is rich as a source for twentieth-century historians interested in "radical" social causes, since Boas was a socialist and an outspoken voice for progressive social causes.

Henry Allen Moe Papers, 1920-1975
Title:
Henry Allen Moe Papers 1920-1975
An administrator and humanist, Henry Allen Moe (1894-1975) was the first director of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and was a president of the American Philosophical Society from 1959 to 1970. The Moe Papers are a vast and rich resource documenting all phases of Moe's career, but are also a major source of information on twentieth-century philanthropic organizations. As the first Secretary, then Administrator, and finally President of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation (ca. 1925-1963), Moe made contact with the influential and the aspiring in the worlds of banking, finance, the arts, and sciences. This collection is particularly strong in correspondence and information relating to Latin America, much of it generated through Moe's oversight of the Guggenheim's Latin America Fund and by Moe's otherwise keen interest in the region. This material is diverse, ranging from material on agriculture (see Escuela Agricola Panamericana, 15 boxes) and Peruvian archaeology (see Alfred Kroeber's detailed report) to many folders of correspondence and grant reports from artists, writers, and politicians of South and Central America. Moe served as trustee, officer, and committee member of over thirty private foundations, many of which are well represented in the collection by yearly reports and grant applications, among other types of records.
