Title: Records, 1941-2001 (bulk, 1968-1988).

The records consist of surveys, notes, interviews and background materials for the studies produced by the Industrial Research Unit and its predecessor from 1941 to 1990 and collected and maintained by Herbert R. Northrup. The bulk of the files are from the 1970s and 1980s, but there are also a few files from the Center for Human Resources and its first director, Peter Cappelli. Fininshed studies and publications of the Unit are catalogued in the Imprints Dept. The OSHA files deal with the impact of chemical exposure in the aerospace and chemical industries, and of noise and dust exposure in the textile industry. Series V consists of questionnaires for a 1991 survey conducted for the National Association of Manufacturers on the shortage of skilled workers, including questions on training, retraining, hiring practices, turnover rate and orientaion practices.

The Public Affairs Department records contain biographical sketches of deceased officers, employees and du Pont family members, and histories of company plants, predecessor companies and all line and staff departments. The alphabetical history file contains press releases, memoranda, and pamphlets, which were assembled for various public relations campaigns. Of particular interest is the file documenting the Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn "Better Things for Better Living" campaign. There is also considerable information on the company's pavilions at the 1939 and 1964 New York World's Fairs, efforts to counter the Nye Committee's investigation, lawsuits with other chemical companies over products and patent infringement, and the General Motors and Cellophane antitrust suits. World War II-era publicity stresses Du Pont's contribution to the war effort and its role in the atomic energy program is well described. More recent records describe the impact of the energy crisis of the early 1970s on the chemical industry and the Ralph Nader "Company State" investigation.

This group of Executive Committee records is extremely fragmentary. They were received in three lots, each representing a culling from the complete file. The first lot contained files of historical interest from the 1903-1921 period in which the company assumed its modern shape. The second lot was limited to only a few subjects, primarily dossiers for patent and licensing agreements (1950-1972), for capital improvements (1972), and departmental annual reports (1981-1982). The third lot consists of committee files copies by David A. Hounshell and John K. Smith for their book, "Science and Corporatate Strategy".

J. Lawrence Wilson begins the interview with a discussion of his childhood and early education. Wilson grew up in Rosedale, Mississippi, and attended Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana. After high school, he received a Naval Reserves Officer Training Corps scholarship to attend Vanderbilt University, where he majored in mechanical engineering. Wilson graduated in 1958, and he then served in the Navy for several years as a member of the SEABEEs, stationed in Bermuda. When he returned, Wilson attended Harvard Business School, receiving his M.B.A. in 1963. After graduate school, Wilson came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with a friend to start a private equity firm. Two years later, he joined Rohm and Haas Company. Wilson discusses his experiences in operations research and as treasurer for Rohm and Haas subsidiary Warren-Teed. He also talks about his views on scientific innovation. Wilson further addresses the company's electronics business, his time in Europe, and the changes in Rohm and Haas and the chemical industry, in general, over the past three decades. Wilson concludes the interview with a discussion of the chemical industry's environmental concerns, Rohm and Haas' acquisition of Morton International, his work with the Chemical Manufacturers Association, and his family.

Fred Basolo begins his interview by discussing his childhood in Coello, Illinois and his elementary and high school education. He attended Southern Illinois University where he studied to be a chemistry teacher, but his instructors encouraged him to attend graduate school in chemistry. At the University of Illinois, he studied inorganic chemistry with John Bailar. After receiving his Ph. D., he worked at Rohm and Haas in Philadelphia for three years. He decided to return to academia and accepted a positions as professor of chemistry at Northwestern University. His research interests have included kinetics and mechanisms and metal carbonyls. Basolo describes the connections he made with Italian scientists and his American Chemical Society presidency and concludes by offering his opinion of how general and inorganic chemistry courses should be taught.

Fred Basolo begins the interview discussing his arrival at Northwestern University as an inorganic chemist in 1946. At that time, organic chemistry dominated the field of chemistry, and inorganic chemistry was seen as insignificant. Over the next few years, inorganic chemistry developed into a substantial component of chemistry. Basolo played a major role in that expansion -- what he refers to as "the birth of inorganic chemistry." The formation of the Inorganic Chemistry Gordon Research Conference, which Basolo helped organize, was a key factor in inorganic chemistry's rising significance. Although there was no funding for the first conference and attendees had to pay their own travel and registration expenses, enough chemists participated to make the Inorganic GRC successful, and it developed into an annual event. Basolo describes the Inorganic GRC, as well as his heavy involvement in it, for which the conference presented him an award for his fifty years of service. Basolo also talks about his graduate studies under John C. Bailar, Jr., a coordination chemist for whom Basolo had a great deal of respect, and who instigated the first Inorganic Chemistry GRC. Following in Bailar's footsteps, Basolo specialized in coordination chemistry, and discovered the coboglobin site. Basolo also discusses his role in GRC governance, first being nominated to council, then to the board of trustees, and eventually becoming the board chairman. Basolo had concerns that the rapid growth of the organization and the Inorganic Conference could cause applicants to be turned away. Basolo ends his interview with his thoughts about the future of chemistry and GRC.

The papers consist of extensive client project files and documentation (sketches, mechanicals, models, printed samples, package designs, photographs, and posters), business and professional correspondence, financial records, publications, and personal papers. Among Beall's specialties were corporate identity campaigns and style manuals, and he created logos and trademarks for prominent American companies including Caterpillar Tractor, International Paper, Martin Marietta, Merrill Lynch, and Rohm and Haas, as well as pharmaceutical advertising and periodicals for the Upjohn Company. Some of his most notable designs were a series of posters designed in the 1930s for the United States government's Rural Electrification Administration. A long-time member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Art Directors Club of New York, and the Society of Typographic Arts, Beall compiled scrapbooks and portfolios of his work and the publicity it garnered; his designs and projects were exhibited to acclaim throughout his career, and his homes and studios in New York and Connecticut were photographed by Philippe Halsman, André Kertész, and Arnold Newman, among others.
