Drinkwater, a British playwright and poet, worked for an insurance company. In 1909 he became manager of the Birmingham Repertory Company, and his most successful plays included "Abraham Lincoln," "Mary Stuart," and "Bird in Hand." Drinkwater also published several critical literary biographies.
John Drinkwater was an English author and actor, probably best known for his historical plays. Born in Leytonstone, Drinkwater was a fine athlete but an indifferent student, and left school in his mid-teens to take a job as a clerk. He worked for several insurance companies in different cities, and began writing poetry after experiencing an inspirational epiphanic moment. He continued to write poetry and prose, and became active in the theater as an actor and director with the Pilgrim Players, later known as the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Drinkwater also wrote plays, some of them in blank verse, and became known for his biographical plays centered on figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Oliver Cromwell, and Robert E. Lee. His work is generally considered flawed but articulate.
English poet and playwright.

Robert Benney research materials, 1926-1978
Title:
Robert Benney research materials 1926-1978
The Robert Benney research materials include photographs, clippings, posters, playbills, and ephemera relating to his career as a portraitist of stage and screen personalities. The bulk of the material spans 1926 to 1947, and consists of photographs, and clippings of Benney's work depicting New York stage performers in their roles. Many photographs and clippings depict entire stage scenes, and, in addition to stage actors, there are photographs and clippings of musicians, dancers, comics, and radio personalities, and a small number of items relating to films of the period.

Title:
J.M. Dent & Sons records, 1834-1986 (author files D-Gi).
Author files D-Gi: Author files include correspondence with editorial department staff and with the directors of J.M. Dent & Sons that discusses manuscript proposals and submissions, book acceptance and rejection, editorial recommendations, contracts, copyright agreements, sales figures, royalty payments, legal problems, reprints, and successive editions. Author files also include correspondence regarding illustrations used in Dent publications, correspondence with illustrators, rough drafts of manuscripts, synopses of manuscripts, and photographs of selected authors and illustrators. Note that files are incomplete, since many items of significant commercial value were sold piecemeal in the 1980s and some files from later years are held by Weidenfeld and Nicholson, which took over the Dent firm in 1986.

Herbert M. Prentice papers, 1925-1960
Title:
Herbert M. Prentice papers 1925-1960
The collection is almost entirely bound promptbooks, annotated with notes and cues by Prentice, for the plays he produced. The extensive handwritten staging directions as well as many loose lighting and property plots, cast lists and set design diagrams provide substantial documentation of these productions of the regional British theater in this period (1920s-1950s). There are also some autobiographical writings, notes and drafts for speeches he gave, a small amount of correspondence, mostly with playwrights, photographs from unidentified productions and some photographs of Prentice with colleagues.
