California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Drinkwater, a British playwright and poet, worked for an insurance company. In 1909 he became manager of the Birmingham Repertory Company, and his most successful plays included "Abraham Lincoln," "Mary Stuart," and "Bird in Hand."
