Title: Family papers, 1691-1955.

Collection documents the business career of Joseph Wharton as well as his activities as manager of Swarthmore College for over 35 years. Includes business correspondence (1855-1908) of the Joseph Wharton Gap Establishment, Lehigh Zinc Company, Bethlehem Iron company, Hibernia Mine Railroad Company, as well as more than fifty articles prepared by Wharton dealing with the mineral ore industry, tariff questions, political issues on a national and regional level, and his special concerns in education. The collection contains legal and financial papers for the family from 1778 to 1909. Among the most significant family items are the original diary of Samuel Rowland Fisher, one of the Quaker exiles in Virginia; travel diaries of Jabez Maud Fisher; and corrrespondence regarding the Hicksite/Orthodox Separation in American Quakerism. Also included are extensive correspondence of the Wharton, Corbit, and Lovering families.

This collection includes material from the family and descendants of Rebecca Sinclair Turner and Joseph Turner, Jr. The Turner Family Papers are significant for the source material they provide on Quaker concerns and family life in Baltimore and the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the 19th century. The manuscripts include extensive correspondence concerning the Indian Committee of Baltimore Yearly Meeting and records of goods sent to the Pawnee Agency in Nebraska. Also contains a series of letters (1861-1863) written during the Civil War by Joseph Turner (1831-1865), Rebecca Turner's diaries, and her journal traveling in the ministry with Priscilla Cadwallader in 1850-1851, journals and correspondence of her son, Richard Townsend Turner (1819-1892), and miscellaneous family papers. Among the correspondents are: Deborah Bringhurst, John Comly, Benjamin Ferris, Benjamin Hallowell, Samuel M. Janney, George M. Justice; Mary S. Lippincott, Martha E. Tyson, Deborah J. Wharton, and the families of Sinclairs, Townsends, Underhills and Yardleys.

This collection includes letters of Benjamin and Jane Price, among their family and with other Quakers. Also included are letters received by Benjamin's brother Eli K. Price regarding his legal practice, and by Benjamin's daughter-in-law Lydia H. Price, regarding family news. Bound volumes of letters record the correspondence of Benjamin and Jane Price while one or the other travelled in Quaker ministry. Of particular interest are : letters of Edward Hicks, regarding the Hicksite controversy ; letters of John Comly, regarding Quaker beliefs, the worship of Baal, and the views of Edward Hicks; letters of Deborah F. Wharton on Quaker concerns in Indian affairs; letters of Dillwyn Parrish regarding Quaker involvement in the Anti-slavery movement ; and an account by Benjamin Price of an Elias Hicks meeting. Other correspondents include Thomas Garrett, William Wharton, Jane Mott, and William Ellery Channing, regarding matters of practical or business concern.

This collection includes letters written to Mary W. Longshore from the family of her sister, Martha Williams, after the Williams moved from Pennsylvania to Warsaw, Ohio. Included are letters from her sister, brother-in-law, Isaac B. Williams, and nephews, Jonathon and Jeremiah. These letters relate family and local news, and news about the temperance and anti-slavery movements. A letter from Isaac B. Williams, dated 1861, relates his thoughts on the prospect of civil war. A letter from Dr. Joseph S. Longshore relates news of an 1840 anti-slavery society meeting in Bucks Co. Also included is an unsigned copy book that contains thoughts on the Bible, spirituality, and accounts of Quaker ministry, including that of Deborah Wharton.
