Family papers, 1691-1955.

Collection documents the business career of Joseph Wharton as well as his activities as manager of Swarthmore College for over 35 years. Includes business correspondence (1855-1908) of the Joseph Wharton Gap Establishment, Lehigh Zinc Company, Bethlehem Iron company, Hibernia Mine Railroad Company, as well as more than fifty articles prepared by Wharton dealing with the mineral ore industry, tariff questions, political issues on a national and regional level, and his special concerns in education. The collection contains legal and financial papers for the family from 1778 to 1909. Among the most significant family items are the original diary of Samuel Rowland Fisher, one of the Quaker exiles in Virginia; travel diaries of Jabez Maud Fisher; and corrrespondence regarding the Hicksite/Orthodox Separation in American Quakerism. Also included are extensive correspondence of the Wharton, Corbit, and Lovering families.

The Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company, formed in Pennsylvania during the 1840's moved to a West Seneca, N.Y. site in 1899. Steelmaking began in 1903 and by 1909 the City of Lackawanna had been established around the steel plant. Purchased by Bethlehem Steel in 1922, the facility expanded until employment reached over 20,000 in the mid - 1950's. Decline in the 1970's led to the closing of the Lackawanna Plant in 1983. Joseph Wharton (1826-1909) was a prominent Philadelphia Quaker merchant, industrialist, scientist, and philanthropist who was active in 19th century Delaware Valley manufacturing, business, and education development.
