Rose Macaulay was born in Rugby in 1881 and educated at Somerville College, Oxford. She was a prolific writer: her first best-seller was Potterism in 1920 but she also published a biography of John Milton, and wrote verse. Her final novel, The Towers of Trezibond (1956) was especially highly regarded and created a literary sensation. She also wrote many articles for periodicals such as The Spectator and The Observer . Her correspondence with a distant cousin, the Revd. J.H.C. Johnson, was published posthumously as Letters to a Friend (1961) and Last Letters to a Friend (1962).
Macaulay (1881-1958) was an English novelist.

Haines, Todd, 1942-. The Todd Haines collection, 1864-1990 (bulk 1960-1980).
Title:
The Todd Haines collection, 1864-1990 (bulk 1960-1980).
The Todd Haines collection consists primarily of correspondence and printed material by or about the British author Anthony Dymoke Powell. The original typed signed letters by Powell are addressed to bookseller Handasyde Buchanan, New Zealand author Patrick A. Lawlor, and John Lelliott, an admirer. The Powell-Buchanan correspondence complements the presentation copies from Powell to Buchanan in the Special Collections Research Center. Other Powell material includes page proofs of two of his works, 'Books do furnish a room' (1971) and 'Messengers of day' (1978), and a group of periodical issues containing articles by or about Powell. Included in this latter material are Powell's 'Dinner at the Muleygrubs' in the 'WineMine' (no. 24, winter 1972), his 'The nature of the connoisseur' in 'Sotheby's review' (Oct./Nov. 1990), and an inteview with Powell and symposium on his work in 'Summary' (Autumn 1970), the cover of which has a caricature of Powell by Sir Osbert Lancaster. The collection also includes two autograph letters from Dame Rose Macaulay to author Gerald Gould, a typed manuscript by Macaulay entitled 'On obeying orders', as well as an original signed cartoon by Sir Osbert Lancaster. Among the unrelated miscellaneous items completing the collection is a mourning envelope containing dried leaves and inscribed "These leaves were on Lincoln's coffin and were given to me by Col. O'Neil at Indianapolis. Mary E. H. Conover."
