The bulk of these papers consist of Ireland's Shakespeare forgeries, including complete copies of Vortigern and King Lear. The collection also includes correspondence, literary manuscripts, and original artwork credited to members of William Henry Ireland's immediate family: his father Samuel Ireland (d. 1800); his mother Anna Maria de Burgh Coppinger, a.k.a. Of particular interest are two original paintings credited to Richard Westall; two miniature portraits on ivory credited to Jane Ireland; and a watercolor credited to Paul Sandby.

Title:
The flitch of bacon (or The matrimonial relish) [manuscript], ca. 1775.
An early draft of a comic opera which appears never to have been produced. The dramatis personae is in Ireland's autograph; the text, much altered and interlined, is not. An autograph note by William Henry Ireland says his father named the piece The matrimonial relish, and that Bate Dudley's Flitch of bacon was a plagiarism of it. Another manuscript (D.a.82) the only title used (in letters about it) is The flitch of bacon.

Title:
The flitch of bacon (or The matrimonial relish) [manuscript], ca. 1775.
A fair copy in Samuel Ireland's autograph of a comic opera which appears never to have been produced. The piece is not given an actual title but is referred to in letters (see below) as The flitch of bacon. In an autograph note in another manuscript (D.a.81), William Henry Ireland says his father named the piece The matrimonial relish, and that Bate Dudley's Flitch of bacon was a plagiarism of it.

Autograph letter initialed from T.C. [Thomas Caldecott] to John Mander, Bampton, Witney, Oxford [manuscript], 1797 November 30.
Written after the cessation of all controversy respecting the authenticity of the [Ireland] Shakespeare Papers by one who had opportunities of seeing some parts of the conduct and process. He denounces Edmond Malone's reasons for suspecting the documents, and believes Samuel Ireland entirely ignorant of this fraud. Neither father nor son is capable of writing a sentence of English correctly.
