This collection was formed by the late Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) in connection with his study of company and family history. It contains elements which were selected from both company and family papers. The material was lodged in his Wilmington office for a number of years prior to his death in 1954. It was deposited with the Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation, Inc., in 1954 and is recorded as Accession 501 in the records of the Hagley Museum Library. Particularly elements which were readily identifiable as company archives, especially certain business books, have been transferred to the records of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. (Series I). The remaining portion of the collection for which precise provenance could not be established, has been left intact; this residual portion is reported in this entry.

Lillie includes an entry from his father's journal dated 3 Oct. 1831 in which J. Lillie describes his meeting with Totten and lists the whereabouts of their classmates.

Typewritten transcript of diary kept by William P. Smith, a native of Virginia, while a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. The diary begins with a narrative of Smith's journey to West Point by train and continues with a description of his studies, his performance in class, examinations and recitations, guard and march duties, homesickness and treatment for ill health, walks and other amusements, school meals, and the activities and misbehavior of other cadets. Smith mentions visits to West Point by General Winfield Scott, General Joseph G. Totten, and Jefferson Davis, then secretary of war. In the concluding pages of the diary Smith describes his trip by steamship and by train to his hometown near Staunton, Va., and his reunion with family members.

The Samuel Francis Du Pont Papers include correspondence with more than 1,500 individuals. There is a good deal of official and semi-official correspondence describing naval practices and policies as well as Du Pont's career. Of particular interest are letters from British diplomats and naval officers during the 1840s and 50s describing the operations of the British Navy. Letters received from William B. Reed, American minister to China, document the negotiations leading up to the Treaty of Tientsin which opened up China to western trade. Letters from American missionaries Samuel Wells and William and Edward Syle describe the missionary movement in China and efforts to eradicate the opium trade. The files also contain correspondence reflecting Du Pont's role in the Naval Efficiency Board and the reform movement which sought to modernize the navy as it moved into the age of steam.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Title: Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.
