As a result of this malicious misrepresentation, Pritchard sustained damage to his health and claimed that Liggett & Meyers should pay for that damage.

The William H. Johnson papers document Johnson's career at North Carolina State University with materials from 1941 to 2005, the bulk of which are from 1956 to 1983. Johnson conducted extensive research in tobacco curing in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at N.C. State, and the papers are primarily comprised of his research notes and their associated sketches, drawings, and photographs. Also documented are Johnson's professional activities, including published papers and presentations at tobacco, agriculture, and engineering conferences around the country and across the world. Other material documents Johnson's involvement in numerous committees and groups, including chairing the Energy Advisory Task Force, a joint venture of N.C. State's School of Agriculture and Life Sciences and School of Forest Resources. The papers also document Johnson's correspondence with companies such as Philip Morris, Monsanto, Liggett & Myers, R.J. Reynolds, and others. North Carolina State University Professor Emeritus William H. Johnson held various teaching positions in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, starting as Research Instructor in 1956 and reaching the rank of Professor in 1969. He served as Assistant Director of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service of N.C. State from 1983 to 1994, and received the rank of Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering in 1994. Johnson's major research interest was tobacco processing, and he was part of the research team that developed the bulk curing process for tobacco.

The collection consists of approximately 895 insurance plans and maps. Most of the originals were single sheets, approximately 21" x 26" containing a site plan and axonometric drawing with materials denoted by a watercolor wash. The sheets also contain a printed synopsis of the plant and available fire protection systems. The majority of the plants are textile factories, and more than half are located in New England. Of the remainder, most are in the Middle Atlantic States, with decreasing numbers in the Midwest and Southeast. Important non-textile plants include the Boeing Aircraft Company at Seattle, the Glenn L. Martin plant at Baltimore, the rubber factories of Akron, the Buick plants at Jackson and Flint, the General Electric plant at Toledo, the Cleveland Railway Company shops, the Ford Motor Company at Louisville, and the tobacco factories of Virginia and North Carolina.

As a teenager, Virgil Johnson [b.1918] became interested in the designs and symbols on cigarette packs like "Black Cat" and "White Roll", and he began actively collecting in the 1930s. His interest intensified during the 1940s when he was stationed in North Africa and across the Mediterranean region as a photographer with the U.S. Navy. Mr. Johnson collected cigarette packs for over fifty years, and was a member of the Cigarette Pack Collector's Association. Approximately 6000 cigarette packages, foreign and American, arranged in 24 albums. Manufacturers include names such as those shown below.

The collection documents advertising history, especially television and the management of client accounts; the development of television shows and other aspects of television programming, including the selection of actors and audience profiles; advertising clients' account histories; the corporate administration of the J. Walter Thompson Company; and the career of Dan Seymour. There is limited material about Seymour prior to his employment by the J. Walter Thompson Company in 1955 or after his retirement from it in 1974. Clients of the company represented in the collection include Eastman Kodak Company, Ford Motor Company, Kraft Foods Company, Lever Brothers Company, and Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company. There is considerable overlap in the content of the series in this collection. Seymour reorganized the radio and television operations of the J. Walter Thompson Company. This process of reorganization and the overall administration of the Radio-Television Department is documented in the Radio-Television Department Series. Aspects of administration documented include roles of advertising executives, new business development, and client relationships. Radio programming is minimally represented. The Corporate Administration Series documents company-wide administration and operations, however there are scattered links to subjects involving the Radio-Television Department. The series documents executive management at the highest levels and reflects internal organization and procedures as well as company-client relations. The Clients Series reflects account management and documents advertising strategies, billings, the development of new business, and negotiations with clients.
