The papers consist of correspondence, writings, notes and research materials, clippings, memorabilia, photographs and financial records of William Graham Sumner, a sociologist, professor at Yale University, and advocate of free trade and the gold standard. The correspondence (over 13,000 items) documents many of Sumner's interests including the Yale College curriculum and economic and political issues. It also includes substantive accounts from friends in the South about Reconstruction, the Freedmen's Bureau, and the Tilden-Hayes election. Family correspondence spans the years 1863-1908. There are over 100 letters written by Sumner during the last years of his life to Albert Galloway Keller. Writings in the papers include manuscripts of published and unpublished works, among which are two unpublished books on paper currency. Essays, both complete and fragments, sermons from his service as an Episcopal minister, drafts of lectures, addresses, and several items of fiction are also included. Sumner's exhaustive notes cover a variety of topics on American and European history. The largest set is made up of 250,000 note cards, catalogued and used in the preparation of Science of Society. Among his major correspondents are E. S. Dana, Timothy Dwight, Morton Easton, Irving Fisher, Edwin Godkin, Charles Hines, Alfred Bishop Mason, Simon Newcomb, Joseph Sumner and David Ames Wells. These papers previously formed part of the Sumner-Keller collection.

In a letter 1895 December 9, written in another hand and signed by Spencer, he declines to contribute to "McClure's Magazine" because of his obligation to "Popular Science Monthly" which was founded by a close friend and is the sole medium for the publication of his articles in the United States. A magazine portrait of Spencer is pasted on the first letter. In an undated note Spencer notifies Miss Thickle, the housekeeper at Queens Gardens, that he will be back the next day and that Mr. Lott will dine. On the verso of the note to Thickle is a long explanation from an unidentified guest at Queens Gardens to "Davidson" explaining how he obtained Spencer's signature and describing dining at the same table as Spencer, Bishop Whitehouse and Youmans. He relates an anecdote told by Spencer about a book bound in "divinity calf" and assures his correspondent that Spencer is not an aethiest. He also mails Davidson speeches given at a banquet for the actor Irving and urges him to see him perform when Irving comes to the U.S. A clipped magazine photograph of Spencer is included.

This collection contains mostly entomological material, with much information on the description and identification of particular insects, entomological collections, and the study of entomology in Europe and the United States. In addition, there are materials on medicine and hospitals during the American Civil War, on the Corps of Topographical Engineers, the United States Army, on natural history in the United States, and on the LeConte's family. Some letters are written to President Rutherford B. Hayes and concern the Commissionership of Agriculture, for which LeConte was considered, but not appointed. Letters of John Eatton LeConte and Joseph LeConte are included.
