In a letter 1895 December 9, written in another hand and signed by Spencer, he declines to contribute to "McClure's Magazine" because of his obligation to "Popular Science Monthly" which was founded by a close friend and is the sole medium for the publication of his articles in the United States. A magazine portrait of Spencer is pasted on the first letter. In an undated note Spencer notifies Miss Thickle, the housekeeper at Queens Gardens, that he will be back the next day and that Mr. Lott will dine. On the verso of the note to Thickle is a long explanation from an unidentified guest at Queens Gardens to "Davidson" explaining how he obtained Spencer's signature and describing dining at the same table as Spencer, Bishop Whitehouse and Youmans. He relates an anecdote told by Spencer about a book bound in "divinity calf" and assures his correspondent that Spencer is not an aethiest. He also mails Davidson speeches given at a banquet for the actor Irving and urges him to see him perform when Irving comes to the U.S. A clipped magazine photograph of Spencer is included.
