French novelist and poet.
Pierre Louys (1870-1925) was a French poet and writer known for his erotic and sensual themes, particular lesbian. He was good friends with André Gide and Oscar Wilde.
Pierre Louys was a French writer of the Parnassian school.
French poet and novelist.
Pierre Louÿs, born December 10, 1870 in Ghent, Belgium, spent most of his life and career in France. A writer and poet, famous for his treatment of lesbian and Classical themes, some of Louÿs' most famous works include Les chansons de Bilitis and Aphrodite (moeurs antiques).
Pierre Louÿs (1870-1925) was a French poet and writer.
French author.
Pierre Louÿs was a French writer of the Parnassian school.
Pierre-Philippe Louis, a French lawyer, and his wife, the former Claire Céline Maldan, had temporarily fled to Belgium from political turmoil in France when their second son, Pierre-Félix, was born December 10, 1870, in Ghent. Pierre-Félix became an excellent student at the École Alsacienne, where André Gide was in the class ahead of him. The two boys grew to be close friends and together founded Potache-revue in 1889. In 1890 Pierre expressed his passion for classical Greek culture by changing the spelling of his name to Louÿs (in French the name of the letter y means Greek i ) and pronouncing the final s to give it a Greek flavor.
Louÿs had another early literary friendship with the poet Paul Valéry, who was still unknown when he and Louÿs became acquainted. Both young men were members of the poet Stéphane Mallarmé's circle. For several years Louÿs was also a friend of Oscar Wilde, although they eventually quarelled, as did Louÿs and Gide. Another artist who formed an early friendship with Louÿs was the composer Claude Debussy.
Louÿs's first book was a collection of poems entitled Astarte (1891). In 1895 he published what is today his best-known work, Les chansons de Bilitis (1895), which exemplifies the type of eroticism that his work is noted for. La femme et le pantin (1898) is often considered his finest novel.
Women, including prostitutes, played a large role in Louÿs's life. He married Louise de Heredia in 1899, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1913. Among his mistresses was the dancer Claudine Roland, who died in 1920. In 1923 he married Claudine's half-sister, Aline Steenackers, the mother of his two children. A third child was born shortly after Louÿs's death on June 8, 1925.
French poet, novelist, and editor.
Born Pierre-Félix Louis, this erudite aesthete was called a "grand poète de l'amour et de la mort".

Frederick R. Koch collection, 1640-1983
Title:
Frederick R. Koch collection, 1640-1983.
The Frederick R. Koch Collection consists of musical, literary, and historical materials collected by Frederick R. Koch, principally through purchases at public auctions, 1979-1986. Including individual items, concentrations of related materials, and several extensive archives, the collection is a broad and deep resource for study of the lives and works of a range of composers, authors, and other historical figures. Most materials are music manuscripts, literary manuscripts, drawings, and correspondence of European, English, and American composers, authors, and artists. Also present are historical manuscripts, photographs, albums, and other papers. While the contents of the collection span the seventeenth to twentieth centuries, most date from the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, with particular strengths in French, Italian, German, and British music, French literature, and British art.

Egan, Beresford, 1905-1984. Beresford Egan correspondence, proofs, and receipts, 1929.
Title:
Beresford Egan correspondence, proofs, and receipts, 1929.
The collection contains 37 letters, some typescript and some handwritten, 14 Feb.-15 Aug. 1929 and undated, to R.A. Caton and the Fortune Press, London, concerning drawings Egan is to do for English translations of four books by Pierre Louÿs (1870-1925): Aphrodite, Adventures of King Pausole, Cyprian masques (attributed to Lucian of Samosata), and The songs of Bilitis. Another letter mentions four additional books, but Egan never made illustrations for them. Additional letters also concern drawings Egan is to do for De Sade, co-authored with Brian de Shane. Some of the letters indicate disagreements between Egan and R.A. Caton, with Egan apologizing for some of his sarcastic remarks. One of the letters is written on the verso of a receipt for Fortune Press in Egan's handwriting indicating a cancelling of their contract. Two of the letters are written by Catarina, his wife, for her husband. Another two are in his wife's handwriting, but signed by Egan. The collection also contains 6 carbon typescript letters from the Fortune Press to Egan, 14 Feb.-19 June 1929, on the same topic (including some concerned about Egan's lateness in sending them illustrations), another receipt for Fortune Press in Egan's handwriting, a proof copy of a publisher's note for Louÿs' Aphrodite, and a proof copy with corrections of the title page of Hellebore (later called De Sade). Many of the letters include envelopes. The collection also contains nine loose envelopes that are unassociated with any of the letters.

Pierre Louÿs Papers, 1839-1934 (bulk 1891-1919).
Manuscripts, correspondence, and assorted personal and third-party papers make up the Carlton Lake Collection of the French poet and novelist Pierre Louÿs and shed considerable light on his professional and private life. Louÿs's entire career is represented in the Works series, from juvenilia to posthumously published verse, although with more emphasis on his poetic than his prose works. Correspondence is the largest series in the collection. The largest single correspondence is with Louis Loviot, friend and fellow man of letters. Other correspondents are Louÿs's half-brother Georges Louis, the historian and novelist André Lebey, writer Claude Farrère, writer Natalie Clifford Barney, actress and journalist Musidora, Wilde biographer Robert Harborough Sherard, and his mistress Claudine Roland.
