Beresford Egan correspondence, proofs, and receipts, 1929.

The collection contains 37 letters, some typescript and some handwritten, 14 Feb.-15 Aug. 1929 and undated, to R.A. Caton and the Fortune Press, London, concerning drawings Egan is to do for English translations of four books by Pierre Louÿs (1870-1925): Aphrodite, Adventures of King Pausole, Cyprian masques (attributed to Lucian of Samosata), and The songs of Bilitis. Another letter mentions four additional books, but Egan never made illustrations for them. Additional letters also concern drawings Egan is to do for De Sade, co-authored with Brian de Shane. Some of the letters indicate disagreements between Egan and R.A. Caton, with Egan apologizing for some of his sarcastic remarks. One of the letters is written on the verso of a receipt for Fortune Press in Egan's handwriting indicating a cancelling of their contract. Two of the letters are written by Catarina, his wife, for her husband. Another two are in his wife's handwriting, but signed by Egan. The collection also contains 6 carbon typescript letters from the Fortune Press to Egan, 14 Feb.-19 June 1929, on the same topic (including some concerned about Egan's lateness in sending them illustrations), another receipt for Fortune Press in Egan's handwriting, a proof copy of a publisher's note for Louÿs' Aphrodite, and a proof copy with corrections of the title page of Hellebore (later called De Sade). Many of the letters include envelopes. The collection also contains nine loose envelopes that are unassociated with any of the letters.
