The collection includes receipts, accounts, and other documents relating to Elihu Stout's business and personal life, and materials submitted to him for publication. John Bayard's papers contain business documents and letters from his family in Grenoble, France, and Evansville and Vincennes (Ind.). Henry S. Cauthorn's material includes correspondence related to his business interests, state Democratic Party politics, and the Indiana state legislature (1860-1880). Also included is receipts and legal documents of French inhabitants at Vincennes (1780-1810), and a draft and copy of an unpublished MA thesis by Valerie Catherine Knerr, "Elihu Stout, Indiana's First Printer."

His letters provide insight into the major political debates leading up to the Civil War. The correspondence has been interspersed and placed in chronological order.

Also included are wills and deeds of the Wilber, Barnett, Watts, Baker, and Taylor families; genealogical papers of the Wilber, Taylor, and Watts families; clippings concerning George F. Baker, Jr., and Taylor genealogy; a Whitney scrapbook containing clippings, letters, and bills of sale pertaining to the Taylor and Lemon families; and Bushrod B. Taylor's family register and travel log listing his voyages in the U.S. Navy between 1849 and 1882.
