Born in Creen, Ill., in 1838, DeMotte enrolled at Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) in 1859; became professor of mathematics at IWU; joined the Union Army and became 1st Lt. of Co. G, 68th Regiment Ill. Volunteers; married Sara J. Kern in 1865; became Vice-President of IWU until 1884, when he became president of Chaddock College (Quincy, Ill.); later worked again for IWU until his death in 1904.
