Papers, 1846-1950 (bulk 1846-1857)

The collection contains correspondence written to William Keller by his cousins from Pennsylvania, the Ramey family, and his brother Lewis Alexander Keller. The majority of letters are from Lewis Keller and provide observations on the everyday life of a college student and topics of important historical and political significance. His letters provide insight into the major political debates leading up to the Civil War. The correspondence has been interspersed and placed in chronological order.

William Keller was the son of Daniel Keller, Jr., a potter from Pennsylvania. William was born in Indiana on 23 May 1824 and like his father was also a potter. He lived in Floyd County, Indiana in the towns of Galena and New Albany. William's brother Lewis Alexander Keller attended Indiana Asbury University (later DePauw University). He was expelled from there and afterward studied law at Indiana University, graduated in 1854, and died in Mt. Carmel, Illinois in 1856. The Ramey family correspond...
