Autographs, correspondence, portraits, and envelopes. Most of the materials were donated by Fred Rosenstock to Brigham Young University, but some were acquired from different sources. Many of the items were originally gathered by Barton Orville Aylesworth, a biographer and an autograph collector in Fort Collins, Colorado. Contains autographs, correspondence, portraits, and envelopes. Most of the items were originally gathered by Barton Orville Aylesworth, a biographer and an autograph collector in Fort Collings Colorado. The materials are largely letters and autographs produced by prominent American and British authors, editors, politicians, and other important artistic and historical figures in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The items relating to the individual creators are being cataloged separately and will be available on the Brigham Young University cataloging data base. BYU special collections created this artificial collection placing the material in alphabetical order.

Dr. Thomas Addis Emmet (1828-1919) was a renowned surgeon and early collector of American manuscripts of the revolutionary era. His collection was purchased by John S. Kennedy and presented to The New York Public Library in 1896. Emmet's papers consist of correspondence and a small quantity of personal papers. Correspondence with Worthington C. Ford, letters to Walter R. Benjamin, and letters from Augustin Daly concern the purchase of manuscripts; letters to Albert Rosenthal relate to prints and portraits to be used as extra-illustrations in his books. Personal papers include Emmet's business licenses and receipts for book and manuscript purchases. Also present are several fragmentary or unidentified 18th century manuscripts

The collection contains six typescript letters. Guiterman writes four letters to Professor [Edwin Osgood] Grover, 16 July 1930, 28 Jan. 1931, 7 Apr. 1937, and 7 Feb. 1938, giving information about his life and plans. In the letter of 7 Apr. 1937, he mentions Walter Damrosch and that his opera, Man without a country, for which Guiterman wrote the libretto and lyrics, is scheduled to be performed at the Metropolitan. Guiterman also writes to Mr. [Walter Romeyn] Benjamin, 14 Mar. 1916, sending the verses he had asked for and thanking him for "The Drums!;" and to Miss Kahen, 12 Nov. 1941, sending a portrait [not included] and giving information about lyrics and songs he has written.

Handwritten and signed letter, addressed to George L. Beam, and dated 17 Sept. 1923. Also included is the envelope in which the missive was sent, a handwritten poem titled "Recompense," and a magazine clipping of the item in print dated February 1914. In the letter Benjamin informs Beam that he has paid most of his bill, but more funds are due.

The papers of Thomas O. Mabbott document his scholarship and reflect his leisure time interests. The first series consists of nine boxes of personal papers, such as certificates, diplomas, photographs, and correspondence. This correspondence includes letters from: Walter R. Benjamin, Clarence S. Brigham, S. Foster Damon, August Derleth, J. Milton French Clarence Gohdes, Charles F. Heartman, Philip Jordan, John W. Ostrom, Mary E. Phillips, Frank L. Pleadwell, Arthur H. Quinn, G.E.B. Saintsbury, Vincent Starrett, William P. Trent, Robert W.G. Vail, and J.H. Whitty. The next two series represent Mabbott's life's work as a scholar. The "literary interests" section reflects his reading and research subjects. Included are notes on authors from William Blake and John Milton to Washington Irving and Mark Twain. There are also articles by Mabbott and others on a variety of literary subjects. The Edgar Allan Poe series is the largest in the collection, nearly thirty-five boxes documenting the main thrust of Mabbott's research career. These research files relate to specific Poe works, published and unpublised articles about Poe by Mabbott and others, copies of Poe's writing, and copies of journals in which his works originally appeared. The Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe edited by Thomas O. Mabbott is found here in manuscript form, complete with discarded plans, illustrations, page proofs, contracts, and reviews. The next four series represent Mabbott's other interests. There are 3 boxes of broadsides and materials relating to 15th century prints. Another 3 boxes contain certificates, auction catalogs, and articles about his special hobby, numismatics. One other box contains correspondence and published material relating to his interest in newspaper collecting. The writings of Maureen Cobb Mabbott and her correspondence make up the final series.
