Contents cover a variety of practical, religious, and moralistic subjects of the period, as well as ancient proverbial wisdom, mostly copied or adapted from printed sources. Printed sources include: the Geneva Bible, almanacs, chronicles, husbandry manuals, commonplace books, pattern books, sets of prints imported from Antwerp, and English broadside ballads and woodcuts (for a full list of sources see Trevelyon's sources in facsimile introduction, p. 16-21). The first part of the manuscript consists of historical and practical information; a time line; an illustrated calendar; moralizing proverbs; a series of computational tables and astronomical diagrams; lists of families linked to William the Conqueror; distances between London and cities around the world; a rule for determining the dates of legal terms; a list of fairs; geographical accounts of Britain, Wales and Cornwall; descriptions of the Cambridge and Oxford colleges; a list of the shires, cities, and boroughs of England; a list of the wards and parish churches of London and environs; and a table providing distances between London and other notable towns in England. The second part of the manuscript consists of a series of biblical and monarchical chronologies, beginning with the account in Genesis of the creation of the world and the fall of man, followed by the generations of Adam, the sons of Noah, the kings of Israel, the genealogies of Mary and Joseph, the twelve tribes of Israel, the early rules of Britain, the kings and queens of England, and the kings and queens of Scotland. The third part of the manuscript contains edifying and cautionary verses, with illustrations, on the Twelve Degrees of the World, the Five Alls, the Ten Commandments, the Nine Worthies, the Nine Muses, the Seven Deadly Sins, the Seven Virtues, the Seven Liberal Sciences, and the Twelve Apostles; as well as figures important to Protestant history, the six Gunpowder Plot traitors; Pagan, Jewish and Christian heroes; additional parables, proverbs, and lists of virtues and vices accompanied by scriptural and secular verses. The fourth part of the manuscript is devoted to patterns, most without text, of caps, mazes, marquetry, knotwork, strapwork lettering, floral and abstract borders and motifs, repeating patterns, and alphabets suitable for embroidery and other applied arts, plasterwork, woodwork, painting and garden design. The fifth and final part of the manuscript is a list of sheriffs and mayors of London from 1190 to 1601.

While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

American Council for Judaism. Records, 1943-1988.

Records of an organization formed near the end of World War II by American Jews opposed to Zionism. The records document the group's efforts to promote acceptance of Judaism as a religion rather than a nationality, to expand U.S. immigration regulations, to aid non-Zionist refugee relief organizations, to urge compromise in Palestine by all faiths and ethnic groups, to expand its own membership, and to conduct other activities. Photographs consist primarily of images depicting Lessing J. Rosenwald, a president of the organization, 1947-1967. Photographs in an album document a Bavarian Relief Action, including images of school children, villages, and folklife events in Germany. The processed portion of this collection is summarized above, dates 1943-1967 (though primarily 1943-1953), and is described in the register. Additional accessions date 1939-1988 and are described below.

Lessing J. Rosenwald was one of the most prominent private print collectors in the United States. A benefactor of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Rosenwald and Carl Zigrosser were associated with one another through the Museum, Rosenwald's Alverthorpe Gallery, and the Print Council of America. Their correspondence concerns gifts, exhibitions and acquisitions for the museum, as well as meetings, minutes and programs of the Print Council. Along with their personal correspondence, these files contain carbons and drafts of letters from Zigrosser to Rosenwald, some clippings and programs,and a file of reception photographs.

=aElizabeth Mongan became in 1937 the first curator of the print collection of collector Lessing Rosenwald. When Rosenwald gave his collections to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Library of Congress in 1943, she was appointed the National Gallery's curator of prints, working both in Washington and with Rosenwald at his home in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania for the next twenty years. Mongan described her early training with Paul Sachs and travels in Europe, including a meeting with Bernard Berenson. She recalled Rosenwald and the dealers he worked with and bought from and noted her activities preparing the collection for Rosenwald's Alverthorpe Gallery and for transfer to the National Gallery and Library of Congress. She remembered prominent Gallery staff members and shared recollections of work there.

Title: Jean Hagstrum Papers, 1921-1995.

Arranged in five main subseries: biographical and educational background files, correspondence, graduate files, course materials, and addresses and publications. Hagstrum's personal and professional correspondence with Richard Ellmann, Paul Elmen, and Karl and William Olsson is of special interest. These letters deal with literary contributions and personal matters, and include comments on visits to various countries in Europe. The correspondence with Elmen and Olsson also includes many exchanges on literary criticism and religious matters. The folder titled "Great Men" includes letters to and from Stephen Spender, Chauncey Brewster Tinker, Geoffrey Keynes, and others. Hagstum's activities as a member and officer of the Modern Language Association are well documented by six folders of material. The course materials include primarily notes for lectures and some reading notes, reading lists, exam sheets, syllabi, and student papers. Several folders include copies of Hagstrum's notes to students assigning term or exam grades and explaining, often in some detail, why a particular grade was given.
