Ebenezer Stevens Papers, 1776-1822

Title: Ebenezer Stevens Papers 1776-1822

Ebenezer Stevens (1751-1823) served as a soldier and officer in the Continental Army and the New York State Artillery Corps during the Revolutionary War. Post-war, Stevens was an agent for the United States War Department as well as a successful merchant in New York City. This collection documents his activities as a merchant both indepentently and for the militia. Additionally, it documents Stevens' role as a commanding officer, specifically during the fortification of New York City in the early 1800s.

The diaries and account books in the collection include the family expense book (1739-1819) of Helen Kortright Brasher, a diary kept by Judith Brasher in 1766, extracts from a journal of a cruise in a privateer (1813), a diary (1837-1848) possibly belonging to Robert Colgate II, and a journal (1856-1858) of a voyage to China. Among the genealogical information is a biography of Helena Kortright Brasher written by Craig Colgate, Jr.

Title: DeWitt Clinton papers

United States senator, 1802-1803; Mayor of New York City, 1803-1815 (except for 1807-1808 and 1810-1811); Governor of New York State, 1817-1821 and 1825-1828. Papers consist chiefly of letters, 1790-1835, but also include military commissions signed by Clinton as Governor of New York and other official and legal documents; autographs; portraits; clippings; and printed material. Clinton's letters contain discussions of senatorial, gubernatorial, and mayoral matters; politics; real estate in New York City and State; legislation concerning the Manhattan Company of New York City and its Utica and Poughkeepsie branches; proposed banks; canal construction; New York City historical and medical societies; and family and personal matters. The two major recipients of letters are John Pintard (1759-1844), merchant, philanthropist, and New York City official, and Henry Remsen (1736-1792).

Title: John Pintard papers, 1779-1880.

Papers and correspondence, 1779-1880. Pintard's correspondence, 1780-1840, deals with such matters as his business activities, his financial difficulties and bankruptcy in the 1790s, the election of 1812, politics throughout the period, family matters, death or illness of friends, and his interest in various academic, cultural, philanthropic, and religious organizations. Some of his more frequent correspondents were John Wakefield Francis, Walter Livingston, De Witt Clinton, James Henry Clinton (serving aboard U.S.S. Constellation), Dr. Richard Davidson of New Orleans and other members of the Davidson family, Samuel Bayard of Princeton (N.J.), Fitch Hall of Boston, Elias Boudinot, Samuel Farmar Jarvis, and Lewis Pintard. There is also a large group of letters to his daughter, Eliza Noel Pintard (Mrs. Richard Davidson), of Pinckneyville, Mississippi Territory, and New Orleans, 1816-1833. The collection contains a diary of New York weather kept in 1779, and nine other diaries kept at various times between 1783 and 1807, including a diary of his reading while in debtors' prison. Some of the other material relates to Pintard's own interests, some to the affairs of various organizations in which he was active. It includes two commonplace books; an analysis of Blackstone's Commentaries, written by Pintard in 1799; reminiscences of his early life, probably either dictated to his daughter Louise Servoss or copied by her; notes on the Mississippi River and New Orleans, dated 1801; a manuscript article on the trade of New Orleans; a scrapbook of clippings, manuscripts and a broadside about the Erie Canal celebration in 1823; and miscellaneous papers. The material related to organizations includes indexes to volumes 10, 14 and 15 of the manuscript minutes of the Common Council of the City of New York (1790-1793, 1803-1804, and 1804-1806); papers pertaining to the financial affairs of the New-York Historical Society, ca. 1809-1828, and corrrespondence and papers about the Jacob Serred legacy to the General Theological Seminary, including Pintard's account of his involvement in the rise and progress of the seminary. There is also a large group of papers related to Pintard's son in law, Thomas L. Servoss, and his family, much of it correspondence, 1850-1880, about the family's claim under the French spoliation claims.

Papers, 1904-1957, mainly documenting her artistic career. They include a looseleaf notebook listing her paintings, their description, history and disposition, with a list of paintings sold, and a list of pictures painted in the summer of 1931 in Cuernavaca, Mexico; a small address book; photographs of her paintings, her family, and her summer home at Cragsmoor (N.Y.); a notebook containing a diary of trips to England, France and Spain in 1904, 1905 and 1922; a diary for 1926; some copies of a printed newsletter, the Cragsmoor journal; letters, mostly dealing with her work, written by and to dealers, museums, and purchasers, but including a copy of a letter written by Turner's mother in 1864; scrapbooks containing clippings, letters, menus, Christmas cards, catalogs of exhibitions of Turner's paintings, and other memorabilia. Her diary for 1904 includes descriptions of visits to the studios of Sargent, Lavery, and Edwin Austin Abbey. The material documents the honors and awards she received, and also includes miscellaneous personal items: a passport issued in 1922, an affidavit by a cousin documenting her date of birth, her registration book documenting her studies at Columbia Teachers' College, receipts, invitation cards, and caricatures drawn for her in ink and watercolor by Charles Curran. There is also some genealogical material, including a bookplate of her great-grandfather, John Pintard, and letters acknowledging gifts from her to the New-York Historical Society.
