Alexander, Francesca, 1837-1917. Autograph letter signed : [Florence], to "Dearest Joanie" [Joan Severn], 1903 Nov. 26.
Title:
Autograph letter signed : [Florence], to "Dearest Joanie" [Joan Severn], 1903 Nov. 26.
Sending apologies that neither Alexander nor her "Mammina," Lucia Gray Swett Alexander, have written "in a great while," noting that "letter-writing every year becomes more difficult for [Mammina], and as for [Alexander,] all summer [she] has had nobody to write for [her]." Noting that the Alexanders "stayed at Bassano much later than usual," where "the principle event of the summer was the great c[y]clone" and "the election of the new Pope." Expressing condolences that Severn's daughter-in-law has "passed into another church," and expressing thankfulness that Severn's daughter Lily has completely recovered (see MA 7362.131). Thanking Severn for offering the Alexander's the drawing from Alexander's Roadside Songs of Tuscany found in the college (see MA 7362.132, 134-135), and asking her to send a note arranging it with Mr. Spilmann. Also referencing a meeting between Severn and Alexander, hoping "always that one day [they] shall meet again," and noting that "if only [she] could see [Severn] once again, how many things [she] would have to tell."

Discussing American newspaper falsehoods (concerning Ruskin?) first seen by the Alexanders 10 days prior. Asking whether Severn knows William Higgs, and whether the story about Miss K.G. and her picture is true. Describing the ruthless tactics of the New York Herald's editor, and offering for Francesca to "send to an American paper a correct statement of the facts known to her," noting that "no name is more respected in America than hers." Concerning the health of Alexander's "Fratello," John Ruskin: Alexander is "terrified " at the "very idea of the legal steps [Severn] speaks of," and concerned that the present "attack" is "something quite different from the delerium of illness." Reassuring Severn that Ruskin is "apt to turn against [Severn]" only when he is "not himself," and that the "more he is himself, the more he clings to [her]." Also lamenting that a new law has forbidden the sending of plants out of the country, keeping Alexander from directing anemone roots to Severn as requested.

John Ruskin Correspondence with Lucia and Francesca Alexander, 1882-1889.
This collection contains 300 letters, dating from 1882-1889, which document the personal and professional relationship between John Ruskin (1819-1900), Francesca Alexander (1837-1917), and her mother, Mrs. Francis Alexander (1814-1916), (nee Lucia Gray Swett). Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, the Alexanders met John Ruskin in Italy in 1882 and they immediately began corresponding. Many common themes run throughout the letters such as the writers' emotional and physical well-being, art, Ruskin's affairs, professional activities, news about mutual acquaintances, and spiritual beliefs. Ruskin's letters to Francesca focus on her development as an artist. The collection also contains enclosures forwarded by Ruskin such as letters from important acquaintances, news articles, manuscript proofs, and drawings by Ruskin.

Concerning potential publication of Alexander's Roadside Songs of Tuscany, indicating that the wish of her "Mammina," Lucia Gray Swett Alexander, "is to have the whole book reproduced by photograph ... page by page ... just as she saw it growing up under [Alexander's] hand, years ago," but reiterating that "the manuscripts ... are in no way [the Alexander's] property." Noting that Alexander will send to Severn under another cover a letter "from a young Canadian lady ... telling about a visit which she made to the Mother of the Orphans," hoping that it will interest Severn and Alexander's "Fratello," John Ruskin, but requesting that Severn send the letter back to Alexander when she has read it.

Expressing great pleasure that Alexander's "Fratello," John Ruskin, is "well enough at last to enjoy [Severn's] pleasures with [her]." Discussing the quince jelly sent to Brantwood (see MA 7362.108), expressing "doubts as to whether it will ever arrive at all," since, two days after it was sent, "the railroad people sent ... to ask whether [Lancashire] was the same place as Lancaster." Alexander then goes on to note that "with all the Latin, Greek, algebra, mathmatics, philosophy &c., now considered necessary to qualify a man for selling railroad tickets, geography gets crowded out." Also mentioning the improved health of Alexander's "Mammina," Lucia Gray Swett Alexander, and the terrace garden.

Informing Severn that the Talbots left Venice because "he married his second wife only six months after the death of his first, who was her sister." Discussing Francesca's eyesight, and describing their life in Venice. Noting that their upstairs neighbor has three dogs, and that Swett "thought of buying them with a view to giving them a permanent bath in the canal." Thanking Mammina for writing openly on the Millais subject, noting that Ruskin and his mother often talked openly about it with Severn. Noting that she is sure Ruskin's mother was "most indulgent and kind, in all ways to her son's wife," though neither she nor her husband approved of the marriage, and that Ruskin later saw that it had been a marriage of convenience and that Effie had "made love to him to save her Father from disgrace" and was already engaged. Discussing the mental health of John Ruskin. Asking Severn to allow Ruskin to write "anything he pleases" to the Alexanders, noting that she will "fully understand he is not himself" and that it is only his "disturbed mental condition." Commenting on how the present delusions are like those he suffered in Paris (in December 1888), hoping that the worst is over, and noting that "the attacks are less violent, but more persistent." Enquiring as to the specifics of Ruskin's work on Francesca Alexander's Christ's Folk in the Apennine. Confiding that Francesca takes Ruskin's illness very hard, and supposing that Severn "smiles at what [she] considers the nonsense of "sister and brother," but it has seemed quite real to [Francesca]." Papers, 1809-1902 (inclusive), 1820-1898 (bulk).
The scrapbooks, apparently arranged by Lucia Alexander, contain mainly letters to the Alexanders and Italian photographs. There is no consistent chronological order. A small portion of the letters relates to Francis Alexander's career as an artist in Boston. The bulk reflects the Alexanders' contacts with Italian society, particularly with the family of Luisa Murat, with English and American visitors to Florence, and Lucia's interest in autographs of famous people. Two volumes record reactions to Fanny's books, art, and charities. Many letters from prominent individuals are manuscript copies; some letters are fragments. Most of the photographs are of Italian scenery, buildings and works of art; a few are of notable individuals. The scrapbooks also contain drawings by Fanny and others, watercolors, prints, invitations, death announcements, programs, and clippings. There are also five folders of items found loose in the scrapbooks, and a copy of Fanny's Tuscan Songs.

Alexander, Francesca, 1837-1917. Index [to Roadside songs of Tuscany] / [Francesca Alexander]
Title:
Index [to Roadside songs of Tuscany] / [Francesca Alexander] [1882?]
Between 1868 and 1882 Alexander inscribed on folio-size sheets of paper in black or sepia ink songs and poems collected among the peasants of Italy and decorated each sheet with portraits, landscapes, and flowers. She transcribed the works in Italian with her translations of them into English in parallel columns. The entire collection of 122 leaves was purchased by John Ruskin in 1883. In 1885 Ruskin and George Allen published the work with an introduction and commentary by Ruskin with the title Roadside songs of Tuscany. In 1897 Alexander's mother was responsible for the publication of the work by Houghton Mifflin & Co. under the title Tuscan songs. Ruskin donated all but one third of the drawings to the Sheffield Museum and to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. He gave some of the drawings to friends and kept the rest for himself. This drawing is one that Ruskin kept for himself.
