Index [to Roadside songs of Tuscany] / [Francesca Alexander] [1882?]

Between 1868 and 1882 Alexander inscribed on folio-size sheets of paper in black or sepia ink songs and poems collected among the peasants of Italy and decorated each sheet with portraits, landscapes, and flowers. She transcribed the works in Italian with her translations of them into English in parallel columns. The entire collection of 122 leaves was purchased by John Ruskin in 1883. In 1885 Ruskin and George Allen published the work with an introduction and commentary by Ruskin with the title Roadside songs of Tuscany. In 1897 Alexander's mother was responsible for the publication of the work by Houghton Mifflin & Co. under the title Tuscan songs. Ruskin donated all but one third of the drawings to the Sheffield Museum and to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. He gave some of the drawings to friends and kept the rest for himself. This drawing is one that Ruskin kept for himself.
