Officer in the New York State Militia.
Old Fort Johnson, a National Historic Landmark located in Montgomery County, N.Y., was the 18th-century home of Sir William Johnson, an official of the British Empire. It was later owned by wealthy philanthropist John de Watts Peyster, who presented it to the Montgomery County Historical Society in the early 20th century. As of 2011, the Montgomery County Historical Society continues to own and operate Old Fort Johnson as a historic site and museum.
American soldier and author.
Brigadier General of the New York State Militia during the 1850's and the Civil War and author of numerous books on military and world history. Charlotte Augusta Southwick Waddell papers, 1860-1890, 1880s
Title:
Charlotte Augusta Southwick Waddell papers 1860-1890 1880s
Charlotte Augusta Southwick Waddell (d. 1891) was a society figure in New York City. Her husband, Coventry Waddell, was a wealthy financier who held various political positions during the Jackson administration. In the 1857 financial panic they lost their money and Mrs. Waddell supported herself by giving readings and private lectures at her home. Collection consists of letters, 1860-1890, received by Mrs. Waddell from friends and social acquaintances and printed invitations and programs. Letters concern personal and social affairs.

Letter to Brigadier General F. Townsend concerning several matters, including an Association to which De Peyster belonged, but now regards as too unconcerned with serious matters. He also mentions his agreement with an idea that all militia offices over the rank of Major should be abolished, the number of Major Generals should be reduced to two or three, the number of Brigadiers to six or seven, and the staff officers should be selected from the lines. Carrington Family papers, 1749-1929
Title:
Carrington Family papers 1749-1929
The papers consist of correspondence, pamphlets, printed material, scrapbooks, sermons, and other papers relating to members of the Carrington family. Henry Beebee Carrington (1824-1912) and his grandfather, David Lewis Beebe (1763-1803), are two central figures in the papers. Material relating to David Lewis Beebe, including essays and sermons, documents his religious duties in Connecticut and family concerns in Ohio. Henry Beebee Carrington material includes correspondence, a diary, a letterbook, maps, pamphlets, scrapbooks, and other items documenting his experiences as a student at Yale University, as a lawyer practicing in Ohio, and as a commanding officer for Union forces during the Civil War. Carrington's role in military campaigns and treaty negotiations with Indians of the American West is also documented. His design of Fort Philip Kearney, the site of a famous massacre, and treaty negotiations with the Flathead Indians of Montana are detailed in pamphlets, scrapbooks and other papers.
