Charlotte Augusta Southwick Waddell (d. 1891) was a society figure in New York City. Her husband, Coventry Waddell, was a wealthy financier who held various political positions during the Jackson administration. In the 1857 financial panic they lost their money and Mrs. Waddell supported herself by giving readings and private lectures at her home. Collection consists of letters, 1860-1890, received by Mrs. Waddell from friends and social acquaintances and printed invitations and programs. Letters concern personal and social affairs.

John Wolcott Phelps (1813-1885) was a graduate of West Point, Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, and the presidential candidate of the anti-Masonic American Party in 1880. The collection consists of his correspondence, writings on politics and anti-Masonry, diaries recording his experiences in the Seminole War, Mexican War, the expedition against the Mormons in Utah, and the Civil War, and commonplace books recording his views on slavery, emancipation, presidential elections and other political matters of the day.

A certificate of non-liability, 1864 June 30, from the New Jersey Board of Enrollment, exempts Crandell from military duty as he has furnished a substitute. in a letter 1865 August 10, E.H. Crandell discusses leaving portraits of Abraham Lincoln with Fowler & Wells and mentions Joseph Bardwell Lyman and [Laura Elizabeth Baker Lyman?]. In a letter 1869 June 11, Charles H. Landis expresses appreciation for Crandell's article on the Vineland colony. In an undated letter fragment, Joseph B. Lyman discusses General John Watts DePeyster and a commission, as well as DePeyster's library and house; the Hudson and Tivoli line, Laura Elizabeth Baker Lyman; the changing scope of a Civil War book to avoid "following in the wake of William Swinton"; a Mr. Bacon and another publishing venture; and a beautiful Miss Dawson. An undated letter from an unknown correspondent discusses a Mr. Bromley and the corn fodder man. There are also six envelopes to Crandell which do not match any of the letters.

Letter to Reverend Mr. Hayden in which De Peyster asserts that according to the letters of Captain De Peyster and Lieutenant Allaire, the Americans "were vastly superior in numbers" during the American Revolution. He claims that the published history of the Revolution is a myth and "manufactured for a purpose." He asserts that failure in history is never reported like success. Written at New York, N.Y.

Letter to Brigadier General F. Townsend concerning several matters, including an Association to which De Peyster belonged, but now regards as too unconcerned with serious matters. He also mentions his agreement with an idea that all militia offices over the rank of Major should be abolished, the number of Major Generals should be reduced to two or three, the number of Brigadiers to six or seven, and the staff officers should be selected from the lines. He also states that he would leave no stone unturned to get General Sanford's place, should anything become of him. Written at Tivoli.
