Title: The P. S. du Pont Office Collection, 1749-1939.

This collection was formed by the late Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) in connection with his study of company and family history. It contains elements which were selected from both company and family papers. The material was lodged in his Wilmington office for a number of years prior to his death in 1954. It was deposited with the Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation, Inc., in 1954 and is recorded as Accession 501 in the records of the Hagley Museum Library. Particularly elements which were readily identifiable as company archives, especially certain business books, have been transferred to the records of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. (Series I). The remaining portion of the collection for which precise provenance could not be established, has been left intact; this residual portion is reported in this entry.

The collection consists of more than 1,100 letters, clippings, reprints, and other documents amassed by John Sanford Barnes and others to, from, and about notable persons including many with named series in the Naval History Society Collection (e.g., William Bainbridge, John Barry , French E. Chadwick, Gustavus Conyngham, Gustavus Vasa Fox, Caspar F. Goodrich, Isaac Hull, John Paul Jones, Richard Worsam Meade 3rd, Oliver Hazard Perry, and Henry A. Wise). Highlights of the series include documents signed by Presidents John Quincy Adams and James Madison; others signed by John C. Calhoun, Salmon P. Chase, Richard Henry Dana, David Farragut, Robert Fulton, John Hancock, Rufus King, Seth Low, Robert Morris, and Matthew C. Perry; and a lock of Abraham Lincoln's hair removed after his death and sent by Robert Todd Lincoln to Gustavus Vasa Fox at the latter's request. Among David Porter's letters are cartoons and drawings by him, including one of animal-headed naval officers listening to explanations of the value of steam-powered vessels, which complement others in the Naval History Society's Fox collection. The William Smith folder includes a map of an attack on Whampoa, China, in 1870. It is unclear what Barnes's connection was to Nikola Tesla: letters from him indicate that he had visited Barnes in New York in 1904.

The collection contains the manuscripts of "Saga of blood and soil" a history of the Wise family and "Personal reflections and anecdotes of thirteen presidents." The collection contains a transcript of an 1895 May 2 letter from John S. Wise to Holmes Conrad explaining why he is a Republican, commenting favorably on John W. Daniel, and unfavorably on Charles T. O'Ferrell, Thomas S. Martin and John E. Massey. There is also a paragraph by [Jennings C. Wise?], n.d., on the history of the family home "Rolleston" in Princess Anne County. According to Wise John Mercer Brooke used the ice pond to experiment with models for the Virginia (Merrimac) and also that General Benjamin Butler turned the estate into a Freedman's School as an insult to Virginia governor Henry A. Wise. The collection also contains two copies of a set of three poems by Jennings Cropper Wise "Beware the brand of Cain," "Challenge to Communism," and "Plea for a new crusade"; a separate poem "Lee at the Peaks of Otter"; and a prospectus for "Mystery of Columbus."

Papers relating to his professional life as congressman, governor, foreign minister, Unitarian minister, faculty member, and President of Harvard University contain discussions of national and state political issues, foreign relations with France and England, his lifelong association with Harvard University, and his early disenchantment with the Unitarian Church. (Cont) Letters written by Everett, his daughter Charlotte, and his wife Charlotte describe social engagements and their travels in Europe. Letters between Everett and Daniel Webster concern dealings with British minister Lord Ashburton on the issue of visit and search aboard American ships. Also included are letters concerning the attempt of Charlotte Hopkins to wrest control of the Everett papers from her cousin Edward Everett.

Charles Eliot Norton papers

Title: Charles Eliot Norton papers

This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Wilson reports on the Virginia Convention of 1861 several days before the adoption of the Ordinance of Secession on April 17. Topics in the letter of April 10 include a dispatch from Charleston announcing the eminent firing on Ft. Sumter; the city of Richmond as "wild with excitement"; the journey of the Peace Commissioners to Washington; the decision to recognize the independence of the seceded states; the debate over federal forts in seceded states, particularly at Tortugas and Key West; the dilemma of Union delegates; and the tact and power of Henry Wise of whom all the delegates are afraid but Timothy Rives. Other delegates mentioned include Thomas Branch, William G. Brown, John S. Carlile, Thomas S. Flournoy, William L. Goggin, James Marshall, William B. Preston, and George W. Summers. Topics in the letter of April 14, include the failed Peace Commission where "Lincoln treated them coldly;" Lincoln's call for troops; men of Richmond raising the Confederate flag, denouncing the governor and the convention and holding a torchlight parade; demands for war; threats to hang John S. Carlile, and personal thoughts that there will be no peace and "we must secede or divide the state." Other delegates mentioned include Thomas F. Goode, and Alexander H.H. Stuart.

The collection includes correspondence and scrapbooks documenting Worden's career with the Navy. Much of the correspondence relates to his service during the Civil War and dates from the period after January 11, 1862 when he was placed in command of the MONITOR while it was still under construction in New York. Included are letters to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles and Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont describing the battle with the Confederate ironclad VIRGINIA, formerly the frigate MERRIMACK. Also included is a manuscript entitled "Record of Service of Rear Admiral John Lorimer Worden" which contains biographical material and describes his naval career through March 4, 1863 when he was in command of the MONTAUK.
