In letters to Charles Lanman, private secretary to Daniel Webster, Wise recommends George Rice for appointment as secretary to the American Legation in Spain and thanks Lanman for a gift. The latter is signed with his pseudonym Harry Gringos. A letter to Dix, Edwards and Company acknowledges their decision to publish Scampavias in book form.

Charles Lanman, writer, journalist and amateur painter, was born in Monroe, Michigan, June 15, 1819. He spent much of his career working as a journalist in Monroe and Cincinnati, Ohio.
