Land records chiefly concern tracts purchased or sold by Col. Hynes in Davidson, Dickson, and Robertson counties, Tennessee, 1809-1848. Topics reflected in the correspondence include the sugar and molasses business in St. Louis, Mo.; business in Plaquemine, La. and Bardstown, Ky.; and family news.

Title: Papers, 1805-1848.

The collection consists solely of letters and two copies of a St. Louis prices current bulletin for April 5, 1845. Most of the letters were written to Hynes by his son-in-law, Edward James Gay, who lived in St. Louis during the years covered by this collection and was in charge of selling the sugar and molasses that were shipped to that city from Hynes's plantation. His letters to Hynes usually contain information about the sugar and molasses market in St. Louis and the price at which he sold those commodities. These letters also sometimes contain news about his wife and young son and daughter, and they reveal a close personal and business relationship between the two men, who were apparently both Whigs. Several letters written by Lavinia (Hynes) Gay to her father are largely about family matters. The last lettter in the collection was written by Gay to his father-in-law, expressing grave concern on the part of himself and his family over his health and his spiritual life, since he never identified himself with any group of Christians. He also made suggestions about the education of Hynes's son Willie, who was attending college in St. Louis in 1848.

The Gay-Butler-Plater Family Papers consist of correspondence, financial records, legal records, photographic materials, and personal papers created and accumulated by the Gay, Butler, Plater, and Price families of Louisiana documenting their political, social, and financial progression between 1814 and 2009. Correspondence consists largely of discussions regarding family news and problems, financial and legal issues, politics, travel, social life, plantation management and activities, and genealogical information. Financial and legal issues are often closely related and should be treated as complimentary information to each other. In addition to personal financial information particular to prominent family members, items reflect the growth of the family estates through investments, acquisitions of property, real estate development, and their capitalization on mineral and oil rights. Many of the early photographic images are portraits of family members. Most of the items related to Acadia Plantation (the Plater family home in Thibodaux, La.) are collected in their own series and for the most part are of a financial, legal, or administrative nature. Information related to the additional properties owned by the family (Calmes Neck, Foxlair, and Play Garden to name a few) are also available and contain information regarding their acquisitions and activities taking place there.

Personal and business papers of the Gay and related families consists of correspondence, land records, maps, photographs, land plats, bills, receipts, drafts, invoices, contracts and agreements, time sheets and pay rolls. These papers pertain to plantation economy, commerce, the sugar cane industry, slavery, St. Louis Plantation and its operation, Iberville Parish, the Civil War and Reconstruction in Louisiana, social activities and family matters. Manuscript volumes 1-31 reflect the business affairs of Joseph Erwin and include estate record books (1825-1848), cashbooks (1834-1852), expense account book (1836-1849), memoranda books (1812, 1829-52, bank books (1812, 1837-1846), daybook (1843-1847), and a diary (1827-1838). Volumes 32-36 contain daybooks (1826-1848, 1854-1858) and plantation record books (1849-1860) of Colonel Andrew Haynes concerning his estate and the management of his plantation by Edward J. Gay. Edward J. Gay's own record books, v. 37-92, consist of cashbooks (1860-1874, 1883), crop report book (1895-1904), daybooks (1857-1860, 1869-1874, 1877), memorandum books (1862-1908, n.d.), time books (1872-1887, n.d.), and notebooks (1865-1866). Volumes 93-164 comprise the record books of his grandson, Senator Edward J. Gay, III. They include cashbooks (1896-1898), a cane report book (1899-1900), memorandum books (1896, 1899), and scrapbooks (1880-1903, 1918-1919). A photograph album of the Gay family and friends, v. 165, is also among the manuscript volumes. Collection also contains official congressional files that document the political careers of Edward J. Gay and his grandson, U. S. Senator Edward James Gay, III. Files consists of correspondence, financial records, legal documents, newspaper clippings and other printed material pertaining to political campaigns, state and national elections, political patronage, legislative bills, Dept. of Agriculture, construction of levees by the Mississippi River Commission, and the participation in elections and political support of African-Americans. Legislative correspondence discusses pending bills concerning pensions, tariffs, health of rural populations, the creation of the Department of Education, and the transportation, storage and marketing of livestock. Files also contain selected subject materials relative to the American Legion bonus (1920), cotton, sugar, League of Nations (1919-1920), the United States Post Office, railroads, women's suffrage, and U. S. military academies. Among the correspondents are U. S. Senator Randall L. Gibson, Francis T. Nicholls, U. S. Congressman William A. J. Sparks, and William S. Posey, an African-American state legislator from St. Mary Parish. Correspondence also contains requests from servicemen (1919-1920) for assistance in obtaining military discharges and finding employment.

These papers concern the suit of Kellogg v. Gay, in which William P. Kellogg disputed the election of Edward J. Gay as U.S. Representative for the Third Congressional District of Louisiana on November 4, 1884, instead claiming himself to be the winner. They consist of a 4-page printed answer with manuscript notations by Gay; a telegram from Gay concerning notations added to his answer; and a business card of Frank Galt, the notary public in Washington who notarized the document.
