The collection consists solely of letters and two copies of a St. Louis prices current bulletin for April 5, 1845. Most of the letters were written to Hynes by his son-in-law, Edward James Gay, who lived in St. Louis during the years covered by this collection and was in charge of selling the sugar and molasses that were shipped to that city from Hynes's plantation. His letters to Hynes usually contain information about the sugar and molasses market in St. Louis and the price at which he sold those commodities. These letters also sometimes contain news about his wife and young son and daughter, and they reveal a close personal and business relationship between the two men, who were apparently both Whigs. Several letters written by Lavinia (Hynes) Gay to her father are largely about family matters. The last lettter in the collection was written by Gay to his father-in-law, expressing grave concern on the part of himself and his family over his health and his spiritual life, since he never identified himself with any group of Christians. He also made suggestions about the education of Hynes's son Willie, who was attending college in St. Louis in 1848.
