Randall Lee Gibson graduated from Yale College in 1853 and from the law department of the University of Louisiana (later Tulane University) in 1855. He served in the Confederate Army between 1861 and 1864 when he was promoted to brigadier general. Gibson practiced law in New Orleans, La., after the war and was a U.S. Representative (1875-1883) and U.S. Senator (1883-1892) for Louisiana.
