Gay family.

Edward James Gay (1816-1889) and Lavinia Hynes (1821-1891) were married in 1840. They lived in St. Louis, Mo., until the late 1850s, when Gay constructed St. Louis Plantation in Iberville Parish, La. The couple had six children: Andrew Hynes Gay (1841-1914), Edward J. Gay Jr. (1850-1878), John H. Gay (1853-1915), Sophia M. Gay [Crow] (1843-1929), Mary Susan Gay [Butler] (1846-1882), and Anna Margaret Gay [Price] (1855-1939). Edward J. Gay was a planter owning several plantations, sugar mills, and a sugar refinery in New Orleans, as well as serving as U.S. Representative for the 3rd Congressional district of Louisiana between 1885 and 1889. Mary Susan Gay married Major Lawrence Lewis Butler (1836-1898) of Dunboyne Plantation at Bayou Goula, La., in 1869 and had five children. Anna Margaret Gay married Andrew Price (1854-1909), who succeeded Edward J. Gay in Congress. The Prices had no children, so Anna became close to her nieces and nephews, especially Anna "Nannie" Butler who married Richard C. Plater (1872-1955) in 1904.
