Alabama. Governor. Public relations files, 1954-1970.

Title: Public relations files, 1954-1970.

The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of greetings, congratulations, recommendations, and other responses to constituents, public officials, dignitaries, and citizens of other states seeking information or offering observations. This series consists of correspondence, telegrams, clippings, photographs, reports, and publications that document the Governor's relationship with constituents and correspondents from other states. The records also document the Governor's interaction with governors of other states, Congressmen, the President of the United States, the vice-president, and other public officials and dignitaries. The series is divided into two sub-series: (1) general correspondence files and (2) Governor's Conference correspondence and material. The general correspondence files consist of greetings from the governor to visiting dignitaries, entertainers, businessmen, sports teams, and school groups. Among the dignitaries who received letters or telegrams of welcome are Vice-presidents Hubert Humphrey and Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson. Good luck wishes and congratulatory messages to school bands, ball teams, and numerous other school groups are included. The governor also sent greetings and congratulatory messages to governors of other states and constituents celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, births of children, weddings, promotions, awards and honors, and numerous other special occasions. The files also contain letters from constituents asking for money for themselves or for fund raising projects and invitations to numerous graduations, weddings, or requests for speaking engagements. There are letters from citizens requesting appointments with the governor and requests for a recommendation from the governor for a job, promotion, scholarship, and many other situations. This series also contains correspondence, research, and drafts pertaining to the governor's speeches and statements. A large portion of the correspondence consists of letters from students and other citizens requesting the governor's opinion about a variety of subjects from civil rights issues to religion to legal and political issues. Much of this information was requested by students for class projects or term papers. Among the more specialized topics are get well wishes to Governor Lurleen Wallace and condolences, resolutions, and memorial suggestions regarding her death in 1968 May. Governor George C. Wallace received numerous letters and telegrams regarding his stand on segregation, Bible reading and prayer in schools, and other controversial issues. The assassination of President John F. Kennedy resulted in numerous telegrams and letters to Wallace regarding his role in the tragedy. On a lighter side, there are letters and photographs documenting the choice of artist Dmitri Vail to paint the official portrait of George Wallace and the execution of the task. The second sub-series documents the participation of Alabama's chief executive in the National and Southern Governors' Conferences. A large portion of these records deal with the freight rate committee of the Southern Governors' Conference on which the Alabama governor served for several years. These records began during the second administration of James E. Folsom, [Sr.] and continue through the administrations of John Patterson, George and Lurleen Wallace, and Albert P. Brewer. The governor's participation on the Appalachian Governors' Committee and at the Conference of Appalachian Governors is also documented. These records provide excellent information on the creation of the Appalachian Regional Commission in 1964. Throughout the entire series some of the more prominent correspondents include: Werner Von Braun, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., J. Strom Thurmond, Courtney Whitney, Daniel J. Haughton, George H. Many state agencies maintain records, which, although consisting of administrative correspondence, also contain various other records documenting the activities of an agency of division. This particular series consists of the program administration files of James Nelson Bloodworth, judge of Alabama's eighth judicial circuit from 1959 to 1968. During Bloodworth's tenure as judge, the eight circuit included Lawrence, Limestone and Morgan Counties. Included are court records such as briefs, district attorneys' weekly dockets, circuit court dockets, grand jury reports, jury lists, court calendars, decrees, opinions, notes concerning criminal and civil cases and applications for probation. Also present are reports, conference materials, memoranda, clippings, telegrams and correspondence. A significant portion of the correspondence documents Bloodworth's activities as a member of the Ala. Democratic Campaign Steering Committee. Correspondents include: James B. Engelhardt, Sam (Samuel Martin), 1912-1991. Papers 1888-1973.

Title: Papers 1888-1973.

Papers, 1888-1973, containing personal, political, and Highway Department correspondence; financial records; legal documents; biographical materials; printed materials; newspaper clippings; speeches; reference files; photographs; works of art; and scrapbooks. The bulk of the collection contains materials dating from 1958 to 1963. The papers of Sam Engelhardt are a combination of personal and political papers and Highway Department records. Separation of the Highway Department records from the private papers is not feasible, as no distinction was made between public records and private papers in Engelhardt's filing system. His interests as a politician, as chairman of the State Democratic Executive Committee, and as highway director were so interwoven that any attempt to further separate the public records from the private materials would destroy the integrity of the collection. The records are arranged into four subgroups: 1. Private materials; 2. Political materials; 3. Highway Department records; and 4. General materials. The General Materials subgroup contains all of the files which fall into more than one category. Records from Engelhardt's chairmanship of the State Democratic Executive Committee have been incorporated with the State Democratic Executive Committee papers. The largest portion of the collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks. Primary correspondents include Robert P. Bradley, Walter H. Craig, Governor John Patterson, Congressman Frank W. Boykin, Senator Lister Hill, Senator John Sparkman, Representative George Huddleston, Respresentative George Andrews, and Representative Carl Elliott. The correspondence, clippings, and scrapbooks reflect Englehardt's position on numerous segregation and civil rights issues, state and national politics, and Highway Department matters. The financial records include receipts for personal expenses and Highway Department expense accounts and requisitions. The printed materials include political and highway-related publications, campaign materials, broadsides, and memorabilia. The speeches document Engelhardt's stand as a staunch segregationist and his work with the Highway Department. The photographs depict various people, events, and projects documenting Engelhardt's family, cotton interests, political career, and directorship of the Highway Department. All negatives have been removed from this collection and placed in the Negative collection. The remaining items in this collection further document the personal, political, and professional aspects of his life.

Folsom, James Elisha. Papers, 1938-1981.

Title: Papers, 1938-1981.

The papers, 1938-1981, contain correspondence, letters, legal records, financial records, lists, photographs, printed matter, awards, greeting cards, certificates, invitations, postcards, appointment books, medical records, newspaper clippings, serials, books, electoral returns, and maps. The most important series in this collection is the one on political campaigns, 1942-1962. Particularly well documented are Folsom's successful campaigns for Governor of Ala. in 1946 and 1954. Extensive correspondence and letter files for both campaigns are present, as are subject files, photographs, campaign materials, lists, and primary returns. Citizens supporting and opposing his campaign wrote to Folsom. Campaign tactics and strategy for particular areas are discussed, as is political patronage and requests for help. Folsom's private papers series, spanning the years 1938-1981, contains interesting material also, including Ala. politics, Folsom's business ventures, Ala. economic development, family matters, the death of his first wife in 1944, and many other subjects. The photographs are very interesting, though not voluminous. Also of interest is the series entitled political correspondence and letters, 1951-1954. In many respects this series is a direct precursor to his 1954 gubernatorial campaign, and the primary subject discussed is Ala. politics.
