The records of the Motive Power Department consist of eight series. With the exception of the annual reports, they primarily cover the period 1910-1948. Most pre-1910 and post-1948 material has been lost. Coverage is relatively complete for the period 1920-1948. The files of the Superintendent of Motive Power - Northwest System are fragments covering the construction and operation of shops at Dennison, Ohio, and Scully, Pa. The publications and ephemera include samples of standard specification, handbooks for the operation of equipment and professional papers dealing with electrification and the 1913 air brake trials. Drawings are paper copies extracted from files and flattened. Original tracings are available at the Pennsylvania State Archives.

Title: Records, 1927-1955.

The records of the Chief Engineer-Eastern Region describe major construction projects in the territory lying between New York City on the east, Washington, D.C. on the south, and Altoona, Pa. on the west. Of particular interest are a series of reports on the condition of the Long Island Railroad and a second series on bridge tests held at Elkton, Md., Chester, Pa., and New Brunswick, N.J., that were designed to investigate the stresses produced by high-speed running. Other files document the issue of grade crossing elimination during the 1930s and the war-related improvements in the Northeast Corridor during World War II. There is particularly full coverage of railroad facilities and operations in Philadelphia and Baltimore, including the completion of Thirtieth Street Station and the demolition of Broad Street Station in the former, and the station and tunnel improvements at the latter. There is also significant material on the new station at Newark, N.J., and the small stations designed by Lester C. Tichy, the staff architect in Raymond Loewy's office.

The records give nearly complete coverage of the activities of the financial Department at its highest administrative level from 1900 until the Penn Central merger of 1968. Some files have been lost. Many of those covering the later years of Bevan's administration were impounded during the investigations of the Penn Central bankruptcy. Some have been lost and others are in the custody of Penn Central Corporation. Copies of many of these files are included in the Hagley Museum & Library's holdings of Bevan's papers.

Rea's surviving files cover primarily the period from 1905 to his elevation to the presidency at the end of 1912. Earlier documents dating back to 1866 were occasionally preserved, and Rea's correspondence was continued in the files of the vice president in charge of treasury, accounting and corporate work, and of the chief of corporate work.

Brown, Harry F. (Harry Farnsworth), 1886-1980. Papers, 1921-1970 (bulk, 1938-1965).

Harry F. Brown's daughter-in-law divided his papers and photographs according to subject after her husband Marshall Brown's death. Hagley's portion consists of materials relating to American railroads outside of New England. The papers consist almost entirely of engineering reports and memoranda relating to railroad electrification and electric locomotives and cars. About a third deal with the Pennsylvania Railroad, including a copy of the 1955 Gibbs & Hill report on the future of electrification, and technical papers on the use of ignitron rectifiers in locomotives and multiple-unit cars. There is also a 1959 report on a proposed electrification of the B&O's mountain lines, and a 1938 paper on railroad electrification by E. Rowland Hill. The papers also contain a plan and profile view of the Pulaski Skyway highway viaduct in New Jersey.

The records of the Vice President-Operations are a surviving fragment (perhaps less than 10%) of a much larger body of material. A large portion of the VP-O's files were not scheduled for permanent retention, and more was destroyed in the late 1970s. However, the surviving material does cover most of the major developments of the 1928-1955 period. There is significantly less material from Newell's tenure as Vice President (1955-1958) and from the 1960s.

William Gibbs McAdoo Papers, 1902-1938

Title: William Gibbs McAdoo Papers, 1902-1938

William Gibbs McAdoo (1863-1941) was a lawyer with a practice in Chattanooga, Tennessee before relocating to New York City in 1892. He developed system of rapid transit tunnels under the Hudson River and was president (1902-13) of the company which built them. In 1912, McAdoo served as vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee and was later appointed Secretary of the Treasury (1913). During World War I, he served as chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. He moved to Los Angeles, California (1922) and served as a Democrat in the U.S. Senate (1933-38). The collection consists of correspondence, financial records, and clippings related to the personal life and political career of William Gibbs McAdoo.

This subgroup of maps and drawings consists of items extracted from the correspondence files or in some cases purchased from private collectors who salvaged them from the company. All maps and drawings relating to right of way and structures have been arranged here, including items from the files of other departments on the grounds that they were originally prepared by the Engineering Department and to put all drawings of a similar type together. Because the drawings are a synthetic collection of fragments, they have been arranged somewhat arbitrarily according to the type of thing depicted.
