Title: Frank H. Kenan Papers, 1937-1996

Frank Hawkins Kenan (1912-1996), philanthropist, businessman, and civic leader of Durham, N.C. The collection documents Frank H. Kenan's family, social, political, and business networks; various businesses and investment interests; and his extensive civic leadership and philanthropic work with educational, religious, and other non-profit organizations and institutions. Personal correspondence documents relationships with family and friends, many of whom also were associates in business and philanthropy. Financial materials concern Kenan's interests in personal and commercial properties and other investments, often in partnership with W. Clay Hamner. Also included are some materials relating to the Kenan Oil Company, the Kenan Transport Company, and the Flagler System, Inc. Kenan's chief philanthropic work is evidenced in William R. Kenan, Jr., Charitable Trust materials, which document the administration of the many funds, programs, and institutions that it supports. These include Kenan professorships and convocations; the National Center for Family Literacy; the William R. Kenan, Jr., Fund; the William R. Kenan, Jr., Center; the Kenan-Flagler Business School; and the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise. Many activities of the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise are documented, including the Global TransPark, the Kenan Institute Asia, the MBA Enterprise Corps, the Urban Enterprise Corps, and the Durham Scholars Program. Title: Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) records 1969-1999

Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) was started in 1972 at Brown University to promote women in higher education administration. HERS originally started as a referral and placement service for women in higher education, and it now provides professional development opportunities for professional academic women. As of 2005, HERS has three offices: HERS, Mid-America (located at the University of Denver since 1983), HERS, New-England (at Wellesley College since 1976), and HERS, West (at the University of Utah). Beginning in 1976, HERS and Bryn Mawr College have co-sponsored a four week Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration. The Institute has had over 200 participants from the United States and abroad. In 1978, HERS, New England began The Management Institute for Women in Higher Education at Wellesley College. The Management Institute is a series of five weekend seminars providing management training for professional women administrators. The National Associate of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA)/HERS Institute for Administrative Advancement (IAA) is held for a week in June in various locations. Recently HERS completed the HERS South Africa Seminar, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which provided the opportunity for 80 South African women to learn about higher education processes in the United States. All of the offices in the HERS network are involved in other activities to promote women, particularly women in higher education administration. These include working with women on career mapping and guidance; collaboration with other organizations, colleges and universities; attending and presenting in conferences; publishing; and service on various education related boards and commissions. Dr. Cynthia Secor has been the Director of the HERS Network since 1975 and is the founding Director of the Summer Institute and HERS, Mid-America.

Clyde Edgerton is a writer and educator of Durham County, N.C. Literary material includes annotated and revised drafts, galleys, notes, and correspondence relating to Edgerton's novels , , , , , , , and and his short stories and essays, as well as his notebooks and journals. Personal material includes correspondence with family members, friends, and military personnel during Edgerton's service, 1966-1971, as an Air Force pilot during the Vietnam War. The Research Triangle Foundation (RTF) is the owner and developer of Research Triangle Park, N.C., a research park housing research institutes and other businesses in Piedmont North Carolina. Author Gail Godwin was born in Birmingham, Ala.; grew up in Asheville, N.C.; was graduated in 1959 from the University of North Carolina with a B.A. in journalism; and studied at the Iowa Writers Workshop, earning an M.A. in creative writing and Ph.D. in English literature. She has published ten novels and taught in various colleges and universities. Godwin lives in Woodstock, N.Y. The collection includes literary material, chiefly typescript drafts and stages of proofs, notes, background research, correspondence, and marketing and financial materials related to Godwin's published and unpublished books, book reviews, essays, excerpts, libretti, novellas, and short stories.
