Papers of the General secretary of the Communist Party of the United States from 1930 through its dissolution in 1944. When the Party was reconstituted as the Communist Political Association later that year, Browder was chosen as its President, however he was expelled in 1946 following a debate over Party leadership. Following his expulsion, Browder lectured and wrote about Marxism and represented Soviet writers and publishers for publication in the United States. Abraham C. Ratshesky Papers
Abraham Captain Ratshesky (1864-1943) was a banker by profession who founded the U.S. Trust Company with his brother Israel in 1895, and also served in a variety of political positions, including the Massachusetts State Senate from 1892-1895, delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1892, 1904, 1908, 1916, and 1924, Assistant Food Administrator for Massachusetts during World War I, and most importantly, United States Minister to Czechoslovakia from 1930-1932. In 1933, Ratshesky was honored with the Order of the White Lion First Class, Czechoslovakia’s highest honor. A noted philanthropist, Ratshesky was involved in relief efforts for the 1917 Halifax Disaster, the donation of the building used for the American Red Cross headquarters in Boston, and the 1925 “Pennies Campaign” to restore the U.S.S. Constitution. He also founded the A.C. Ratshesky Charity Foundation in 1916, still in operation.This collection contains personal and professional photographs of family, friends and trips to Czechoslovakia, reports on actions as U.S. Minister, diaries, films, and letters from new First Lady Coolidge following the death of President Harding.

This folder contains 4 handwritten anecdotes. One page (Last Lines of Story of Toll Roads) begins "I knew most of the men whose names I have mentioned" [in BHS 301-2-8] and ends "I am glad I was born early enough to hear the stories of the Pioneer trail blazers and to bask in the light of their fires..." There are 2 copies of his article on meeting Czechoslovakia President Eduard Benes on Flagstaff Mountain in 1939, and notes on Benes' speech at C.U. on 12 June 1939. Sixteen page story entitled "Toll Roads."

The cataloged correspondence consists of two brief letters from Beneš to František Kupka. The great majority of the collection is made up of Smutnʹy's manuscripts, notes, and subject files on these topics: Edvard Beneš, the 1938 Munich crisis, World War II, the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia after World War II, the communist coup in Czechoslovakia in February 1948, and Jan Masaryk, the last non-communist foreign minister of Czechoslovakia, who died under mysterious circumstances at the time of the coup. Among the printed materials are publications of the Edvard Beneš Institute, including Smutnʹy's works and Beneš's "Mnichovské dny."
