Title:
Greeley Relief Expedition photograph collection. 1883-1884.
Contains the following type of materials: 11 bound photo albums. Covers the following time period: 1883-1884. General description of the collection: The Greeley Relief Expedition photograph collection consists of photographs made during the course of the Greeley Relief Expedition (1883-1884) by W.S. Schley. 1st Lieutenant Adolphus W. Greeley and his party, while on a scientific expedition to northern Canada, became isolated when severe weather conditions and ice prevented supplies from reaching them. They were stranded with meager supplies and rations causing several of the party members to die. Captain Winfield Scott Schley, with his and several other ships, set out to rescue the starving, beleagured scientific party. This collection, taken during the course of the relief expedition, vividly portrays ships, icebergs, Eskimos, wildlife, and the bleak environs of numerous places on the coast of Greenland and Northwest Territories of Victour Island, Canada. Only six of the original party survived. Adolphus W. Greeley being one of them.
