Title: Papers, 1876-1982.

This collection of correspondence and business records documents the various stages of Forney Johnston's private and public life. The genealogy series contains different variations of the Johnston family tree, including the Hooper and Pollard families. The personal and general correspondence, 1901-1977, contains the courtship and marriage letters between Forney and Clara Vernon Cocke, later correspondence with their children Joseph Forney, Paul, Virginia and other Cocke and Johnston relatives. The letters illustrate Ala. and Va. social life, schooling for the children, and family life in general. The general correspondence covers a broad range of legal and political issues, including the "Scottsboro case" and the civil rights movement; the letters from U.S. Representative Frank W. Boykin are of special interest. The business records document legal cases, financial investments, and tax records. Also included are the estate records of Avon Park (Fla.) the Cocke estate of Bremo (Va.) and Lockerbie (Ala.). The series of photographs, printed materials, and scrapbooks contain family photographs, speeches, poetry, school announcements and projects, historical, literary, and patriotic ephemera, and newspaper clippings.

Papers, 1924-1965, consisting of correspondence, letters, telegrams, memoranda, advertisements, speeches, clippings, photographs, minutes, platforms, resolutions, lists, reports, receipts, budgets, scrapbooks, maps, and published materials. These papers center on the political life, and to a lesser extent, the personal life of Dixon. The political life of Dixon is particularly well documented, including his two campaigns for the governor's office of Ala. in 1934 and 1938, and his involvement in the Dixiecrat movement from 1948 into the 1950's. Correspondence and letters, numerous speeches, and campaign materials, all describe Dixon's and many others activities in great detail. His personal life, particularly his membership in various clubs and organizations, is also well documented, especially his activities in the American Bar Association and the Redstone Club of Birmingham, Ala. There are also several speeches and some campaign literature that document Bibb Graves' campaign for governor in 1934. Horseshoe Bend National Military Park. Papers, 1940-1984.

This collection, consisting of correspondence, letters, historical narratives, minutes of meetings of the Horseshoe Bend Battle Park Association (Tallapoosa Co., Ala.), warranty deeds, options for purchase of land, a boundary report, brochures, articles, clippings, press releases, and a teacher's guide, documents the development of the Horseshoe Bend National Military Park (Tallapoosa Co.) from the earliest efforts in 1940, to its creation in 1959 and use in subsequent years. The collection was accumulated by Judge C.J. Coley, secretary of the Horseshoe Bend Battle Park Association. The correspondence and letters series reflects the efforts of the Horseshoe Bend Battle Park Association, its board of directors, and its officers to gain support for the creation of the park from the Ala. legislature as well as from the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. This series is arranged chronologically by year, and correspondents include Judge C.J. Coley, Marie Bankhead Owen, Rucker Agee, Peter Brannon, Thomas W. Martin, Elbert Cox, Albert Rains, Hugh Comer, Lister Hill, James E. Folsom, George Huddleston, Jr., Kenneth A. Roberts, and John Sparkman. The next series, planning and development, includes letters and meeting minutes that document the actions and activities of the Horsebend Battle Park Association, the boundary report issued by the National Park System Planning Office, and legislative proposals by the Ala. legislature and the U.S. Congress. The third and final series, publicity, contains brochures, magazine articles, press releases, a TV script, photographs, and clippings as well as programs and other memorabilia from commemorative events held at the Park. A teacher's guide to the park's Nature and Man Environmental Study Area (1971) is also available.

Brannon, Peter A. (Peter Alexander), 1882-1967. South Around to Cross Ellicott's Line: photographic scrapbook, 1938.

In 1938 Clayton Albert, Thomas W. Martin, Colonel Marion Rushton, and Peter A. Brannon traveled by car from Claiborne, Ala. to St. Stephens, Ala. and went through Mobile, Ala. One of their destinations was Ellicott's boundary markers. These markers were placed at the 31 degree North Latitude which was the original boundary between the United States and the Floridas (hence the scrapbook's title). After the trip Peter Brannon created this photographic scrapbook, based on the group's experiences. The photographs, the majority being 3 X 4, focus on historical events, places, and people. Of particular interest are the photographs of Fort Morgan, Fort Mims, the Mount Vernon Hospital for Insane Negroes, Blakely, Ala., St. Stephens, Ala., and Alabama residents including tenant farmers, plantation owners, local gentry, African Americans, Cajuns, and Creoles. Brannon also includes typewritten transcripts of primary and secondary sources on historical events such as LaFayette's visit, Alabama settlement, and the Creek and Civil Wars. These sources include excerpts from the Mobile and Montgomery newspapers and military correspondence with Andrew Jackson. The photographs remain in the original volume with nonbuffered acid-free paper placed between the pages.
