William Crawford Gorgas, an authority in the control of yellow fever, worked as sanitation expert in the preparation and construction of the Panama Canal. He was instrumental in the investigation and control of yellow fever in Cuba, Central and South America, and Africa. Gorgas was appointed Surgeon General of the United States Army January 1914. Martin was born in Scottsboro, Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama Law School, practiced law, and became General Counsel for the Alabama Power Company in 1912. From 1919 when he became President, until 1963, he served as the chief executive officer of the company. He was named chairman of the board of the company in 1949.
