This collection contains Brown's personal and business correspondence. It includes letters from his father, William J. Brown, his brother, George, cousin, John Ferguson. Also included are letters to President Grover Cleveland recommending Brown for a federal appointment, a report on fraudulent claims in the Horse Claims division, a scrapbook of theatrical programs and announcements for the Metropolitan Theater, and Masonic and Democratic Party programs.

Papers consist of letters, correspondence, deeds, title bonds, mortgages, assignments, releases, letters patent, certificates, affidavits, contracts, leases, powers of attorney, statements of account, receipts, notices, lists, field notes, plats, memoranda, notebooks, clippings, bill of sale, and other material, dealing with Thompson's business and personal affairs, with the trading, training, and racing of horses, with the early history of the town of Van Buren and Crawford County, Ark., and especially with land speculation. Material dating from after Thompson's death largely pertains to the administration of his estate. Places to which the material relates include Nashville and Davidson, Tenn.; Arkansas Post, Batesville, Columbus, Ecore a Fabre, Fayetteville, Helena, Little Rock, Montgomery's Point, Spadra Bluff, Van Buren, and Washington, Ark.; Arkansas, Crawford, Johnson, Phillips, Pulaski, and Washington counties, Ark.; Fort Gibson, Indian Territory; and Richmond and Lunenburg County, Va. Borden Family. Borden Family Papers, 1715-1902.

Title: Borden Family Papers, 1715-1902.

John Borden was born circa 1798 in Rhode Island. He was a blacksmith and a machinist by trade. In 1816, he moved to what would later become Wood Township in Clark County, Indiana. There Borden took up farming and became a prominent business owner. In 1822, Borden married Lydia Bellows of Massachusetts, born in 1798. In 1823, the couple had a son, William. John Borden died in November 1824, five months before the birth of his second son, John. Lydia Borden took over the business, a tavern, and was by all counts quite successful. William W. Borden was a farmer, geologist, and educator in New Providence, Clark County, Indiana. He was assistant to the Indiana State Geologist 1873-1876. He organized the Colorado mining firm of Borden, Tabor, & CO and established and directed the Borden Institute a college at New Providence. .

Autograph letters and clipped signatures from an album started for Bebb by his father, Edward Bebb, and Samuel Roberts, Welsh political reformer and founder of a settlement in Tennessee. Includes autographs of British politicians, military leaders, authors, and missionaries. Letters collected by William Bebb himself include those from prominent Americans including John Quincy Adams, John C. Calhoun, William Henry Harrison, and Thomas Jefferson. Bebb's own correspondence relates to Ohio and Whig politics.

The Graves family were among the earliest settlers of what is now Madison County, Virginia. Captain Thomas Graves first settled there ca. 1732 and built the family home, "Spring Hill," near the present community of Graves' Mill. This collection consists of land records in Madison, Orange, Culpeper, and Rockingham counties: deeds from Henry Downs, Sr. to Richard Downs, Orange County (1744); Thomas Buckner estate to Joseph Eddins and Thomas Graves (1759), Thomas and Sarah Graves to Joseph Eddins (1760), William and Ann Stowers to Thomas Graves (1762), Michael and Mary Snyder to Edward Graves (1781), John and Sarah Crigler to Edward Graves (1791), all Culpeper County; Adam and Milly Snyder to George Bailey (18--), Pashal Early et al to Adam Banks et al, elders of the Baptist Rapidann Meetinghouse (1806), Thomas Graves to Asa Graves (1809), all Madison County; James Clarke, executor of Thomas Graves estate to Thomas Graves, Benjamin Graves and Asa Graves (1815), Rockingham County; Larkin Broyles, Reuben Berry et al to Asa W. Graves in Madison County (1819, resurveyed 1840 for his heirs), for Isaac Smith (1749), for land from Isaac Smith to Benjamin Smith (1754), and from Isaac Smith to Adam Banks (1778), all Culpeper County. In addition to land records are bills of sale for slaves to Asa W. Graves, lists of slaves (names, ages, value) belonging to Francis E. Graves and Sarah Graves, and receipts for slaves. There are other receipts for payments on supplies for Francis E. Graves and Strickler and Graves, and for tuition paid to William A. Banks for schooling. Three letters from James Whitcomb to Linn Banks, Linn Banks to Asa W. Graves, and Joseph Watson to Asa W. Graves concern the Arkansas Territory military land grant.

Whitcomb's political and business papers, printed materials, and a scrapbook. Documents concerning his early legal career, 1822-1826, are from Fayette Co., Ky. and Bloomington, Ind. Political papers include handbills, newspapers, circulars, and other printed materials; and correspondence. Topics include the operations of the Indiana General Assembly and the U.S. Congress, diplomatic and legal matters, military pensions, and land interests. Business papers include correspondence from the Madison and Indianapolis Rail Road Company regarding Whitcomb's stock. Whitcomb's scrapbook, 1844-1846, contains newspaper clippings on the Indiana governor and U.S. senate election races, state finances, and Nativism.

Title: Land patent, 1845,1865.

Land patent, No. 1261, to Morris from the Indiana Secretary of State's office, based on "an act providing means to construct the portion of the Wabash and Erie Canal within the state of Indiana", dated April 1, 1845. The patent was signed by John H. Thompson, Governor of Indiana, and James Whitcomb, Secretary of State. The patent is a printed form with additional information added in handwriting. It was stamped with the impression of the official seal of the state of Indiana. A note on the back states that No. 427 Canal Land Patent was receieved and recorded in Book 2, p. 492 by Jonathan R. Wilson, Registrar of Wabash County (Ind.). (Ind.) on Jan. 24, 1865.
