Royal Academy of Arts records, 1827-1907.
Title:
Royal Academy of Arts records, 1827-1907.
Collection consists primarily of letters received by the Royal Academy from artists and collectors, together with related correspondence, concerning submissions for exhibitions, 1827-1841 and Old Masters Exhibitions 1870-1873 and 1881. Most of the correspondence relates to the exhibition of 1827 and the Old Masters Exhibitions of 1870-1873. The letters frequently contain descriptions of the works submitted or information pertaining to their provenance, transportation and care. The collection assumes added significance as more than half of the unsolicited Old Master paintings were refused by the Academy. Included are minutes of committee meetings (1869) relating to the first of the Old Master Exhibitions in 1870 which contain a statement of purpose for the exhibition. Also included are copies of the catalogs for the Old Masters Exhibitions of 1870-1873 and 1881.

Title:
Johnsoniana, 1712-1916 (inclusive), 1773-1836 (bulk).
This folio of inlaid manuscripts was compiled during the 1930s by an unknown collector. Almost all of the items relate at least tangentially to Samuel Johnson. The collection includes a group of seven slips of paper bearing what appear to be original unpublished anecdotes regarding Samuel Johnson, all in the same hand. Some are on the verso of postal covers addressed to antiquary Richard Gough (1735-1809). Also of note are two watercolor paintings depicting Johnson at the Thrale home at Streatham Park, possibly done by Clarkson Stanfield as illustrations for an 1836 work by John Murray. Much of the remainder of the collection consists of letters which mention Johnson in passing, refer to his biographies, or quote his published works. Five items came from the papers of publisher John Nichols, and seven items relate to Charles Burney. One letter is addressed to Hester Thrale (later Hester Lynch Piozzi); she is also apparently depicted in the paintings.

Title:
Letters of recommendation for drawing master position, 1836-1864.
The collection consists of five letters of recommendation, 1836, to the directors of the East India Company supporting James Stark for the position of drawing master at Addiscombe Military Seminary administered by the company's Political and Military Committee. Artists recommending Stark include Edwin Landseer, Charles R. Leslie, Thomas Phillips, Clarkson Stanfield, and David Wilkie. Stark also received letters from A.W. Callcott, E.W. Cooke, and William Evans concerning his candidacy. In two letters William Collins writes about the deaths of his mother-in-law and David Wilkie. Stark writes to E.W. Cooke, 23 November 1848, about painting, exhibitions, business, and family. E.W. Cooke writes to Rev. F.W. Gray, 15 July 1864, recommending Stark's son, Arthur James, for a drawing master position.

Roberts, David, 1796-1864. Record books, 1833-1864.
Title:
Record books, 1833-1864.
Manuscript notebooks by the painter David Roberts recording nearly all of his oil painting work. The manuscript is in Roberts' hand throughout, in pen and black or brown ink. Roberts reproduces each of his paintings in small pen and ink sketches, and annotates them with notes on the paintings' production, exhibition, and purchase. Also present are numerous press clippings referring to the works, and occasional added notes by James Ballantine, Roberts' first biographer. Volume 1 includes Roberts' reminiscences of his early career, travels, and colleagues, interspersed with the record of his painting. The record books have served as an important source in biographical works by Ballantine, Jane Quigley, Katharine Sim, and Helen Guiterman. The journal portion of the manuscript falls entirely within the first volume. The author's inscription, "David Roberts, 8 Abingdon Street, Westminster, London, October 24, 1929, aged 33 years this day", prefaces the description of his early life, which takes up the first 30 pages of the manuscript. These notes, written from memory, include Roberts' activity after 1817 as a house painter and theatrical scene painter in York, Perth, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, and at Drury Lane in London with Clarkson Stanfield. It also describes his election to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1823 and gives a summary of the Society's objectives. The remaining journal entries are interspersed among the record of his painted work, though not always synchronous with the record of his painting, especially in the early years. The narrative recounts his early efforts as a painter in oils, his work with panorama painting in London, and his visit to France with John Wilson in 1824. There is an account of the move from Drury Lane in 1826 and of the public reaction to his scenes for the Mozart's Il Seraglio in August, 1826, together with his work on the Diorama in Oxford Street (with Stanfield) and his work on a new drop curtain for Covent Garden. There follows his account of his journey to Spain, 1832-1837, and the history of the publication of the Spanish sketches, on which his popular reputation was based. There is also a briefer account of his visit to the Middle East and the more troubled publication history of his oriental watercolors. Near the end of the first volume, Roberts records extended biographical sketches of three fellow artists, Clarkson Stanfield, John Wilson, and William Leighton Leitch. The 251 vignette sketches are divided between the first volume (156 sketches, through 1852) and the second (95 sketches, from 1853 to 1864). All sketches are in pen and brown ink (or occasinally blue ink), with up to four sketches to a page, varying in size from 2 x 2.5 cm to 15 x 9 cm. In the early years, he made many of the sketches on separate sheets of paper and affixed them to pages into the notebook; in later years, Roberts more frequently draws his record of a particular painting directly into the notebooks. Roberts' preface written in 1858 for his daughter describes this section of the work as "a journal, or inventory, of the works that I have at various times produced and by which I lay claim to my title as a Painter ... [it] comprises 200 pictures in oil--these may not be all, but nearly all of consequence." Roberts numbers and titles each sketch and offers descriptions of the works, with notes on their sizes, purchasers, prices, and exhibition. The notes are accompanied by frequent clippings from exhibition reviews describing the pictures. Also present are occasional notes in graphite by James Ballantine, indicating occasional ommissions and the subsequent history of the paintings in the marketplace. A typical entry may be quoted as follows: "1827, No. 21, Antwerp Cathedral, 4 feet 8 x 3 feet 4. Exhibited at Suffolk St, 1827. Being larger than any picture I had at this time painted. Lord Northwick on coming to town requested to see it previous to the openings of the gallery. The price I had to set upon it was one hundred and twenty guineas. His Lordship became the purchaser and generously presented me with a check for one hundred and fifty. It may be as well to mention that not only in this instance but in almost every other the frame was included in the price." Ballantine adds, "In 1878, Mr. R.D. Newsheim has this picture". There are also short clippings from the English gentlemen, the New times, and the Literary gazette describing the picture as it hung in the Suffolk Street exhibition that year.

Album of watercolors and drawings., 1777-1935, 1790-1835
Title:
Album of watercolors and drawings. 1777-1935 1790-1835
The collection primarily consists of an album filled with drawings, prints, ephemera, and manuscript poems, letters, dedicatory inscriptions, and notes collected or created by John Charles Denham. The album contains 107 small drawings and sketches in graphite, ink, and watercolor by prominent British artists from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries such as Richard Parkes Bonington, John Flaxman, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Paul Sandby, J. M. W. Turner, and Benjamin West, as well as Denham's cohort in the Society of Young Painters: François Louis Thomas Francia, Thomas Girtin, Sir Robert Ker Porter, and Augustus Wall Callcott. Many of the drawings are signed but most are undated, and appear to have been added to the book between the early 1830s and the mid-1850s. Several bear small paper tags with references to unidentified "Old 'Water Colour' Society" volumes and folios. Among the drawings are portrait sketches of James Boswell, Maria Cosway, William Cowper, John Charles Denham, and Sarah Siddons, as well as the title character of Henry Mackenzie's novel Julia de Roubigné. The artist most prominently represented in the album is Sir Thomas Lawrence, with fifteen drawings, one etching, two letters, and a signature clipped from an unidentified document; the most prominent family represented is the painter/author Sir Robert Ker Porter and his sisters, the novelists Jane and Anna Maria Porter. Also present are watercolor landscapes by the wife and daughter of portrait painter Thomas Phillips and three members of the Batty family, and several drawings by Denham's young stepson Henry Thomas Hamilton (d.1813). Two drawings in the album have historically been attributed to Thomas Gainsborough and one to John Hamilton Mortimer.

Etty, William, 1787-1849. William Etty correspondence, 1807-1849, undated.
Title:
William Etty correspondence, 1807-1849, undated.
William Etty's correspondence concerns the British painter's work, his social engagements and other matters. Letters sent by William Etty are addressed to various correspondents, including undated letters to the painters Thomas Uwins and Sir Martin Archer Shee and a letter dated 1845 to John Varley. Included is a letter to Robert Bolton (1826) in which Etty comments on his pursuit of fame and choice of subject matter. In a letter to Richard Coles (1847), Etty provides detailed information on his Joan of Arc paintings, including the source of inspiration for the works and comments on the research he conducted in France. He also remarks that all his large paintings were intended to impart a moral lesson and elaborates on the message contained in several of his most important works. Letters received are primarily from British artists, such as Sir Francis Chantrey, C. R. Leslie, Shee, Sir Charles Barry, Daniel Maclise, A. W. Pugin, Sir Charles Eastlake, Benjamin West, John Constable, David Wilkie, Clarkson Stanfield, William Mulready and Sir Thomas Lawrence. Many of the letters are of a fairly routine nature but Leslie's (1844) praises Etty's work in fresco; Eastlake's (1849) compliments Etty on a recent exhibition; and Lawrence's (1807) comments on his own portrait painting. Pencil sketches of female nudes, apparently by Etty, appear on the letters from Stanfield and Mulready. The clippings comprise a tearsheet from Picture Post and an obituary. Included with the archive are seven items of miscellaneous correspondence, including a letter dated 1853 by a second William Etty and correspondence from other British artists, such as letters by the painters Richard Redgrave and John Dearman, which appear to bear no relation to Etty.
